Mrs. Blackwell, who had been under medical care, died suddenly. Rev. G. V. Hamilton officiated at the funeral, which was followed by burial in San Pedro cemetery with Brown Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The deceased is survived by her husband, Marshall Blackwell; two sons, Otis Passman of Hammond and Delton Passman of Franklinton, her father, James Toney of Franklinton; three brothers, Leander and Adnell Toney of San Pedro and Nelson Toney of Folsom; one sister, Mrs. Estelle Blackwell of Amite. She is also survived by five half-brothers and seven half sisters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, LA 10-07-1949 Harvey Mitchell Buried Tuesday Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Poole Funeral Home for William Harvey Mitchell, 49-year-old Bogalusan, who died Monday at 11 a.m. at Greenwell Springs. The Rev. Johnny Sones and the Rev. D. W. Nix officiated at the funeral, which was followed by burial in the McGehee cemetery with Poole Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mr. Mitchell is survived by his widow, Grace R. Mitchell; his mother, Mrs. E. B. Mitchell, both of Bogalusa; one brother, George Mitchell of New Orleans; two sisters, Mrs. Jimmie Strahan and Mrs. Clyde M. Magee of Varnado. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, LA 10-07-1949 Body of Soldier Enroute Home Mr. and Mrs. Vester Graham, of Tylertown, Miss., have received word from the war department that the body of their son, Sgt. Olin Graham, who was shot down over Austria in 1945, has been found, along with four other crew members of his place, and shipment of the five bodies will be made to Louisville, Ky, for burial there. The war department informed Mr. and Mrs. Graham that though it has been proven their son’s body was among the others, it was impossible to make complete identity of the bodies, therefore, all bodies will be shipped to and buried at Louisville. Sgt. Graham is the nephew of Mrs. O. T. Magee, Mrs. D. W. Broome, W. C. Graham and E. L. Graham of this city. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, LA 10-14-1949 Funeral Held for Native of Norway Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the chapel of the Brown Funeral Home for Martin Peterson, 85 year-old-native of Norway, father of G. H. Peterson of Avenue I. Mrs. Peterson, who lived at his son’s home at 1226 Avenue I, died at 4:10 a.m. Tuesday at the Washington-St. Tammany hospital. The Rev. Roland McCord officiated at the funeral services, which were followed by interment in the Talley Chapel Cemetery of Isabel. Mr. Peterson was born in Oslo, Norway, in 1864, and came to this country while yet a boy. Most of his life was spent farming near Stein. His sole survivor is his son. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, LA 10-14-1949 Funeral Today for Mrs. Hughes Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today (Thursday) for Mrs. Nancy Olivia Hughes, 75-year-old mother of Eubert Hughes of Tenth Street, who died at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday of a heart attack. Mrs. Hughes, who has been in ill health for some time, died suddenly at the home of her son, Eubert Hughes. The funeral will be at the Poole Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Russell McIntire officiating. Interment will be in Kentwood. The deceased is survived by three sons, Eubert of Bogalusa, R. H. and Clyde Hughes of Kentwood, three sisters, Mrs. F. B. Parkhurt of Waynesboro, Mrs. Ida Wilson of Shreveport and Mrs. Fannie Blackwell of Tylertown, 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (Typed as appeared –with mistakes) Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, LA 10-14-1949 Acy Hartfield Survived by 86 Leaving 86 survivors, Acy Hartfield, 80-year-old resident of Eighth Street, died at his home at 1:05 p.m. Monday after an extended illness. Mr. Hartfield who has lived in this vicinity for the past 19 years had been a farmer until he was forced to retire last year. Funeral services were conducted at the Pentecostal Church on Avenue E Tuesday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. J. Magee, assisted by the Rev. Daniel Talley, officiating. Interment was in the Hartfield Cemetery at Purvis, Miss., with McDonald Funeral Home of Poplarville in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hartfield’s immediate survivors include his widow, Mrs. Julien Lee Hartfield; eight sons, aMrtin, Riley, Acy, Jr., all of Poplarville, Fred of Picayune, Rubin, Schuylor and oLuie of oBgalusa and Ira of Ponchatoula; two daughters, Mrs. Vera Crosby of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Mrs. Clinton Rester of Bogalusa. In addition, the deceased is survived by 35 grandchildren, and 35 great grandchildren. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, LA 10-14-1949 Crockett Child Dead David Crockett, five-week-old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Crockett of Covington, died Wednesday morning in a New Orleans hospital. The child was born in Bogalusa, and had been a patient in the New Orleans hospital for two weeks. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 10 a.m. at the Corkern cemetery with the Rev. J. M. Burdette Died on Monday Mrs. Janie Ivey Burdette, 76, of 318 Huron Avenue, died at the Washington-St. Tammany hospital at 11:45 a.m. Monday after admission on Saturday night. Mrs. Burdette, a long-time resident of Bogalusa, leaves a total of 49 direct descendents. She is survived by three sons, M. R. Burdette of St. Andrews, Fla., Wallace Burdette of Hemingway S.C., and R. L. Burdette of Bogalusa; four daughters, Mr. W. S. Hunt of this city; Mrs. Herman Bagby of Osceola, Ark., Mrs. J. T. Breland of Picayune, Mrs. Carl Anderson of Burns, Ore. One brother, Flett Ivey of Slidell; two sisters, Mrs. Doria May of this city and Mrs. May Aikens of Gadsden, Ala. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of the Brown Funeral Home with the Rev. D. W. Nix officiating. Interment was in Ponemah Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, LA 10-21-1949 Funeral Monday for Ed Brock Funeral services were conducted on Monday afternoon at 4 o’clock for Oliver Edward Brock, 39, who died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday in Foundation Hospital following a major operation and a lingering illness. The funeral was held at the Brock home at 211 Pocohontas Street. Burial was in Ponemah Cemetery with Brown Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mr. Brock had been ill for several months and had gone to San Antonio, Texas for treatment of his illness. He had returned to New Orleans to take the operation. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Vivian Brechtel Brock; two children, Judy and Janie; his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Brock; two brothers, Robert and Pat Brock; two sisters, Mrs. Olive Simmons, all of Bogalusa, and Mrs. Mary Fisher, of Washington, D.C. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, LA 10-21-1949 Johnnie Russell Died on Sunday Johnnie L. Russell, 51, one of Bogalusa’s best known and respected citizens, died at 12:25 p.m. Sunday at the Bogalusa Medical Center only six hours after admission with an internal hemorrhage. Mr. Russell has lived in Bogalusa for some 31 years, and was a partner with Filer Seal in the furniture business until recently, when he opened his business. He was one of the city’s most active businessmen until he became ill about a year ago. He was seriously ill for several weeks last summer, but had been able to open his own business since that time. He was stricken suddenly and his death came as a shock to family members and friends. Survivors of Mr. Russell include his widow, Mrs. Lena Goss Russell; two sons, J. L. and Filer Seal Russell, both of Bogalusa; four sisters, Mrs. Pearl Forbes, Mrs. Susie Morgan, Mrs. Rosa Ginn and Mrs. Ruby Morgan, all of Columbia, Miss.; one brother, Jewel Russell, also of Columbia. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. at Poole Funeral Home. Interment was in the Ponemah Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, LA 10-21-1949 3-Year-Old Giacone Boy Dies when Struck by Wood Truck Richard Douglas Giacone, 3 ½ year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Giacone, 417 Second Avenue, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Bogalusa Medical Center Tuesday morning after being hit by a pulpwood truck, driven by Vernon Foster, Varnado Negro, about 10 o’clock. The child is said to have been playing across the street from his home and darted across Second Avenue in the path of the oncoming truck near the Pepe Store. The truck was proceeding north on Second Avenue. The lad was rushed to the Bogalusa Medical Center by Tony Nastasi and his mother. Coroner R. R. Ward said the death was due to a fracture of the skull. Besides his parents, Richard is survived by one brother, Joseph Wade, 8, of Bogalusa; one half—brother, Jasper Giacone, Jr. of Houston, Texas, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Giacone of this city. The child was a nephew of Joe Giacone, former BHS grid great and now of Franklinton, Labonia, Frank, and Vincent and Carlo Giacone, all of Bogalusa; Mrs. Mary Guarino of Baton Rouge, Mrs. Josephine Smith of New Orleans, Mrs. Jane Miller of Bogalusa, Mrs. Ann Jackson of Baton Rouge, Mrs. Lou Shower of Jasper, Ala. Funeral services were conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Annunciation with the Rev. Fr. Hubert Bordenave officiating. Interment was in Ponemah Cemetery with the Poole Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Foster, who first gave his name as Nelson Moses, was to be released today (Thursday) on bond after being charged with operating the truck without a drivers’ license. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, LA 10-21-1949 Bogue Chitto Club Owner Killed Instantly in Wreck Ollie Porter Gatlin, 49-year-old owner of a night club at Bogue Chitto, died instantly about 8:15 p.m. Monday of injuries sustained when he lost control of his jeep on the bridge over Miles Creek near Franklinton. Mr. Gatlin, who was a resident of Franklinton, had been to Hackley to carry a friend and was returning to Franklinton at the time of the wreck. The Jeep struck the right side of the bridge and then ploughed over the southeast corner of the bridge down a dump about 15 or 20 feet. The dead man was thrown from the vehicle, which landed on top of him. Corner R. R. Ward attributed death to a head injury. Mr. Gatlin was born in Mt. Olive, Miss., and had lived in Franklinton for several years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Annie Pearson Gatlin; one son, Ollie H. Gatlin, who is in service in Japan; one daughter Mrs. H. F. Magee, Jr. of Bogalusa; one brother Robert Gatlin of Mt. Olive, Miss., one sister, Mrs. A.M. Fairley of Hattiesburg, Miss., and two grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted this morning (Thursday) at 10 o’clock at the Franklinton Methodist Church with the Rev. B. A Galloway and the Rev. M. W. Melton officiating. Interment was in Ellis Cemetery with Brown Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, LA 10-21-1949 B. H. Fisher Latest Victim; Funeral Set Today at 3 P.M. The third traffic fatality in as many days in Washington Parish occurred Wednesday morning when Benton Henry Fisher, 56-year-old Bogaslusan, died at the Bogalusa Medical Center at 11:22 a.m. of a skull fracture and internal injuries. Mr. Fisher was injured about 8:30 a.m. when the 1946 Chevrolet coupe, driven by W. D. Stanley, in which he was riding left the Franklinton Highway and turned over about four times. He is reported to have been thrown from the vehicle, which was damaged to the extent of $700. State Trooper Clarence Wagner said that the accident occurred when the right front wheel of the automobile went off the pavement on the right side and hit a hole. The driver of the car pulled it back on the highway, but the vehicle went off the pavement on the left side of the highway. When Mr. Stanley attempted to turn the automobile back onto the highway, the car began turning over. The pair was enroute to the Bonner Creek community near Franklinton to visit Mr. Fisher’s brother-in-law, Nelson Corkern, who is seriously ill. Mr. Stanley, manager of the men’s department at Berenson’s suffered a chest injury and shock, and remains a patient at the Bogalusa Medical Center. Hospital attaches reported this morning (Thursday) that Mr. Stanley is doing nicely. He suffered no internal injuries. Mr. Fisher was born and reared in Washington parish, and had made his home in Bogalusa for the past 25 years. He was employed in the mill division of the Gaylord Container Corporation. The deceased was an active member of the Calvary Baptist church, and was serving as a member of the board of deacons at the time of his death. The body is at rest at his home at 544 Second avenue. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today (Thursday at Calvary church with Pastor Howard L. Courtney and the Rev J. E. Albritton, visiting revival evangelist, conducting the rites. Interment will be in Ponemah Cemetery with Poloe Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mr. Fisher is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mollie Stafford Fisher; two daughters, Mrs. Willie Applewhite and Mrs. Bessie Lee Burch; one son, Buford Fisher, all of Bogalusa. He is also survived by two brothers, Iddo and D. C. Fisher, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Dickerson and Mrs. Leah Corkern of Franklinton. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bogalusa Enterprise, Bogalusa, LA 10-21-1949 Jesse Williams Was Found Dead Jesse Williams, 66-year-old Bush resident, who has been visiting his sister, Mrs. Lucy Hinote, of Avenue E, for the past two weeks, died at the Hinote home last night. He was found dead in bed this morning. Coroner R. R. Ward attributed death to a heart attack. Mr. Williams has been ill for about three months. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Florence Diabold of New Orleans; three sisters, Mrs. Hinote of Bogalusa, Mrs. J. W. Fortenberry of Bush, Mrs. W. E. Hogan of Perry, Fla; four brothers A. E. Williams of Beaumont, Texas, Herman Williams of Bogalusa, George Williams of Picayune, Fred Williams of Abita Springs. He is also survived by two grandchildren.
