O., superintendent of schools, De Soto parish, Mansfield, La.,wasborn in Webster Par., LouisianaFeb. 3, 1886, a son of Layfette L. and Fannie(Campbell) Houston. His father was a native of Georgia, and moved toLouisiana when 15 years of age, where he later engaged in farming in Websterparish, and continued this occupation all his life. He was not old enoughforservice in the Civil war, but was a member of the famous Ku Klux Klan, whichaided so materially and effectively in eradicating lawless negroes and"carpet-baggers" during the dark days of reconstruction following the Civilwar. He and his devoted wife still live happily together in Webster parish.Of the twelve children in the family, there are as follows, in order ofdescent: John T., who is practicing medicine in Webster parish; W. M.,a medical doctor in Arkansas; Isaac N., secretary and treasurer of the CentralLumber Co., Shreveport; Lonnie, with the Johnson Furniture Co., ofShreveport, the subject of this biography; Vester E., teaching school inSabine parish; Lee L., Jr., at home; Esther, wife of John F. Atkinson,ofCotton Valley, La.; Ruth, trained nurse, and widow of G. E. Hodges, ofShreveport; Grace, at home; Gertrude, at home, and Ishia (deceased), wifeof W. B. Delafield, of Sarepta, La. G. O. Houston, the subject of thissketch, after availing himself of the educational advantages afforded bythepublic schools of his locality, entered the Logansport high school, graduatingin the class of 1905, after which he taught school for several years. In1909he discontinued teaching and entered Tulane university, where he remainedforone session, after which he again resumed his pedagogical work, and taughtfortwo more years. He then matriculated at the State Normal, completed thecourse, and graduated with signal honors. Aug. 6, 1912, the day of hisgraduation, he was elected parish superintendent of schools of De Soto parish,in which capacity he has served most acceptably ever since. Mr. Houstonis arepresentative citizen, a member of the Baptist church, and also takes alively interest in Masonry, in which order he has attained the Chapter degrees. Aug. 24, 1913, was solemnized his marriage to Orie, a daughterof J.T. and Elizabeth (Brazeale) Fincher, of Pelican, De Soto parish, La. Herfather, who was a lumberman, passed away in 1911, and is survived by hiswife,who is a native of Georgia.-end-
