Two men, Murphy and Brower, were watching the carcass of a hog newly killed expecting to catch the thief. They had but one gun. Murphy went off about a mile to get another, but when he returned his companion could not be found. At last Murphy stumbled over Brower's dead body, his hands mutilated and head nearly severed from his body. His gun and hat were gone. Dogs were procured and put upon the murder's track. The result was the apprehension of Bill Lofton, a freedman, who confessed his guilt and is now in confinement awaiting trial
