She was 80 and a native of West Baton Rouge Parish. Visiting was at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 5 p.m to 9 p.m. Thursday, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Visiting at the funeral home 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday. Religious services at St. Pius X Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Friday, conducted by the Rev. Dominic Nguyen. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Survived by a stepdaughter, Joan McKee, Conway, Ark.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Dianne Altazan Morales, Baton Rouge, and Randy and Sharon Blank Morales, Port Allen; a stepson and spouse, Billy and Bonnie Matthews, Ville Platte; three sisters, Mae Belle Alleman, Gladys Harkins and Iris Black, all of Port Allen; five grandchildren, Melissa and husband, Cullen Buquet, T.L. Morales, Jennifer and husband, Kenny McAlister and Crystal and Brandy Morales; two great- granddaughters, Kirsten Morales and Victoria Buquet; and other relatives and close friends. Preceded in death by parents, James and Ora Felps; and two husbands, Loles "Pete" Morales and William T. Matthews. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and The Salvation Army and a volunteer with the Baton Rouge Food Bank for many years. KENNEDY, OLGA LEVERT A resident of Lafayette, she died at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, July 5, 1998, at Lafayette General Medical Center Hospital. She was 93, born July 13, 1904, in West Baton Rouge Parish, the daughter of the late Octave Levert and the former Ada Bernard. She lived on St. Delphine Plantation as a young woman. After attending the University of Southwestern Louisiana, formerly Southwestern Louisiana Institute, she taught school in Bogalusa and later lived in New Orleans, Waveland, Miss., and Gulfport, Miss. She retired after many years of employment at LSU in Baton Rouge and lived in Lafayette for the past 14 years. In each city, she was active in many organizations and always enjoyed her many friends. Visiting at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Brusly, 9 a.m. Wednesday until Requiem Mass at 10 a.m., celebrated by the Rev. Eric Gyan, pastor. Interment in Roselawn Memorial Park, Baton Rouge. Survived by two sisters, Mrs. Roy (Elaine) Faulk and Mrs. Hiram (Charlotte) McConnell, both of Lafayette; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Max Wilson, and their son, David DuMontier Wilson; and her second husband, Gerald S. Kennedy. PLEUNE, CAROLYN MITCHELL LANGSTON A retired teacher at Port Allen High School, having taught for 181/2 years, she died at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1997, at her residence in Baton Rouge. SAM "SMUTTER" A retired self-employed skilled master carpenter with 50 years of service and a former employee of West Baton Rouge Parish School Board, he departed this life at 5 p.m. Friday, May 15, 1998, at his residence in Port Allen. He was born Feb. 14, 1922, in West Baton Rouge Parish to the late Fugler Bernard and Lillie Bernard Labode. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Visiting at Hall’s Mortuary, Port Allen, noon to 4 p.m. Thursday. Visiting at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 5 p.m. until religious services from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, conducted by the Rev. Bernard, all of Port Allen; 24 great-grandchildren; two godchildren, Jenessa Nelson, Los Angeles, and Catrice Lee, Baton Rouge; two sons-in-law, General Baker, Detroit, and Clifton L. Brimmer, Baton Rouge; two daughters-in-law, Glenda C. Bernard, Baton Rouge, and Faye J. Bernard, New Orleans; an aunt, Clemmins Pattan, Baton Rouge; a loving mother-in-law, Eliza Long; five sisters-in-law, Victoria Lewis, Barbara Balls, Wyoming Sims and Eula Jones, all of Shreveport, and Hazel Labode, Port Allen; six brothers-in- law, Roosevelt Long, Calvin Long, Andrew Jones, Brady Sims, Willie Lewis and Sonny Balls, all of Shreveport; nieces, nephews and other relatives; and friends, including two devoted friends, Beauregard Brown and Joe Williams. Preceded in death by maternal and paternal grandparents; mother and father; a son, Charles Bernard; two sisters, Frances B. Perry and Marion B. Clement; three brothers, Dave Bernard, Fugler Bernard and Paul Labode; a great- granddaughter, April Daigre; an aunt, Edna Jackson; a brother-in-law, Earl Clement; and a nephew, Bernard Perry. He accepted Christ as his Savior in 1988 under the late Rev. Isaiah Warner at Shiloh Baptist Church, Port Allen, where he remained a faithful member until he became ill. "Smutter," as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, was a quiet and loving person who lived his life caring about the needs of others. He had a God-given talent for doing everything as a labor of love. He enjoyed hunting, shooting pool and entertaining family and friends. He gave his family all that he could provide and will be missed by those he held dear, but their loss is heaven’s gain.
