November 9, 1939 Funeral services for John A. Hurt, 60, prominent West carroll plantation owner, were conducted from the home of J.H. Lusk at Epps this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Following the rites at the residence, services were continued at a Delhi Cemetery where interment was made. Conducting final rites for the well-known citizen was the Rev. L.T. Hasting, pastor of the First Baptist church of Monroe, and he was assisted by the Rev. H.w. Ledbetter, pastor of the Epps Methodist Church and the Rev. Almand, pastor of the Delhi Baptist Church. Mr. Hurt died at 11 a.m. Wednesday following a stroke of paralysis on Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Hurt were isiting in the Lusk home when he was stricken. Surviving the deceased are the widow, Mrs. Ruby G. Hurt; a son, John David Hurt of Raleigh, N.C.; one daughtr, Mrs. J.C. Grubbs of Epps; his mother, Mrs. G.B. Hurt of St. Louis, Mo; Mrs.W.H. Johnson of Salisburg, Mo. Mrs. M.W. Taylor of Spokane, Wash. and one brother, Grant B. Hurt of Keytesville, Mo. Another daughter , Mrs. S.A. Wall, died several years ago. Mr. Hurt was for years a leader in church business and civic affairs of West Carroll, being widely and favorably known. He was a member of the Delhi Baptist Church. He was born in Charlton County, Mo. September 25, 1879. He and Mrs Hurt were married in 1907. She was the former Miss ruby Brower. Mr. and Mrs. Hurt moved to West Carroll from Colorado in 1913, and continued to reside in the parish until 1917 at which time they moved to alabama. In 1927 the couple returned to West Carroll and had been residents near Epps since.
