And while he was here, his townsmen outfitted him with a brand new suit so that he will not only be the best all around athlete in the "heavy" field events of the N.C.A.A. meet at Los Angeles, June 22 and 23, but also about the best dressed of the lot. Jack accepted the gift with his usual broad, good-natured smile. Coach Bernie Moore at L.S.U. is counting heavily on his "man mountian" to help the far south school successfully defend its national championship. Torrance, who holds the N.C.A.A. shot record of 52 feet and 10 inches is a favorite to repeat in this event, altho he will meet stiff compitition from John Lyman of Stanford, who has twice done better than 54 feet this spring. The Louisiana Goliath's best mark, however, is 55 feet 1 1/2 inches, the longest heave ever made in competition. Jack told the home folks that he expected to reach 56 feet, or more, in the meet. The "baby" finished third in the discus last year and in all probability will do that well, if not better, again this year. He got around 150 feet in the saucer throw. The big fellow may also toss the hammer, but until a little more than a week ago he had not touched the 16-pound weapon this year. Jack's friends here were mighty glad to visit with him, and as usual, they're all pulling for him to "bust" more records in the big meet at Los Angeles.
