July 2, 1835 Vicksburg Register
 
Died at the lower settlement on the Bayou Mason , in the parish of 
Carroll, State of Louisiana , on Monday, the 30th March, 1835. 
John Dempsey, Sen. age about 70 years one, among the first settlers 
on Lake Providence,  and for many years past a very respectable 
citizen of the parishes of Carroll and Ouachita.  He left behind a 
large family of grown children, and grandchildren, to lament his death.
He lived to a good age, and to see "A wilderness to smile!"
