KENNEDY RITES WEDNESDAY;DIES SUDDENLY IN BAATON ROUGE TUESDAY Approximately 1,000 persons gathered here at the First Baptist church Wednesday afternoon to pay last respects and honor to Preston G. Kennedy, 39, of Oak Grove, who died in a Baton Rouge hospital early Tuesday morning of a heart ailment. At his death, he was serving his first term as state senator, representing West Carroll and Morehouse parishes, the 29th district. A delegation of senate and house members and Agriculture Commissioner Dave L. Pearce joined with constituents and friends of Mr. Kennedy in paying him last respects. The Rev. A.T. Mitchell, the Rev. Tom Miller, and the Rev. J.D. Cheatham officiated at the services. Interment was in Kilbourne cemetery, under direction of Catron-Gay Funeral Home. Local business houses, offices and all parish and governmental offices were closed at the time of the services in honor of the deceased senator. Mr. Kennedy, a native of ward five, was first elected to office in 1951 when he was selected representative to fill the unexpired term of Dudley Seamans, In February, he was elected state senator from the 29th district by the people of West Carroll and Morehouse. He was a 1931 graduate of Kilbourne High School and received his B.S. degree in agriculture from Louisiana State University in 1936. He was an active member of the Freen community First Baptist church, serving as chairman of the board of deacons, president of the Brotherhood and teacher of the men's Bible class. He also had served as associational Brotherhood president. At his death, Mr. kennedy was employed as veterans farm training program instructor by the West Carroll Parish school board. He is survived by his wife, the former Vitae L. Meadows; his father, Jackson W. Kennedy of Kilbourne; his mother, Mrs. J.C. Huffty of Kilbourne; two brothers, Vernon of New Orleans and C.W. of Tallulah. Pallbearers were W.A. Weaver, Dr. C.B. Gray, A.C. Smith, G.O. Thrower, W.E. Durham, Howard Brown, Lee Gregory and P.R. Thaxton. Honorary pallbearers were the governor and all members of the house of representatives and senate.
