West Carroll Gazette - November 5, 1920
J.M. McCowan, aged 78 years, died at the Confederate Hospital at New Orleans 
on Wednesday, Nov. 3, of dropsy after an illness of about three months.  He 
was buried yesterday in the old soldiers cemetery in that city.  To his lony 
son, Mr. T.J. McCowan, we tender our deepest sympathy.
