The petition of William W. Beeler would represent to your honorable Court that William Dempsey late of the said Parish of Carroll, died on or about the 25th of December AD 1839 abinstate and leaving considerable property in your said Parish. Consisting of a pre- exemption claim of Land-a small crop of cotton & so forth & some stock of horses & horned cattle & hogs and other property to a small amount. Said decedent has left children of age and three minor children, also as his heirs to wit namely Mary Dempsey Lorenzo Dow Dempsey and Meahala Dempsey. Your petitioner prays that an inventory be made according to law; that tutor & undertutor be appointed to the aforesaid minors and further prays that he your petitioner (who is the son-in-law) be appointed Administrator of the succession of the said decedent and also for such other & further decrees of your honorable court as the premises may legally require & demand & as in duty bound will ever pray- William W. Beeler has applied for the administration of the succession of William Dempsey, deceased, if no opposition be made in ten days he will be appointed Felix Bosworth Providence, Louisiana Jan 4, 1840 ______________ State of Louisiana} Parish of Carroll } Court of Probate, January 17, 1840 By reason of the law & the evidence in this case being in favor of the petitioner, and by further reason of the regular public notices having been given, and no opposition having been made it is therefore ordered, adjudged & decreed that the within named William Beeler be appointed administrator of the succession of William Dempsey, deceased. ________________ State of Louisiana} Parish of Carroll } We the undersigned do solemnly swear that we will well & faithfully appraise the effects belonging to the succession of William Dempsey, late of said Parish deceased to the best of our knowledge & obligation-so help us God-C.B. Richardson, James Dempsey ________________ State of Louisiana} Parish of Carroll } Be it remembered that on this 21st day of January AD 1840 I Eli Harris, Notary Public of said Parish, proceeded to the Inventory of the effects belonging to the succession of William Dempsey dec'd late of said parish and state, in compliance with an order from the Probate Court in & for the said parish & state dated the fourth of January 1840 after appointing Charles B. Richardson and James Dempsey appraisers & administering the oath required by law the said appraisers being citizens & free holders in said parish and state here follows the Inventory in the words & figures to wit: 1 improvement on the West Bank of Bayou Macon in the Parish of Carroll where William Dempsey lived at the time of his death, with two rights of pre-emption thereon - worth ---------- $2,000.00 5 cows and calves -- $80.00 4 three-year old steers - 80.00 9 two-year old steers - 108.00 2 bulls $40.00 = 3 heifers 2 years @ $8 ----- 64.00 10 large meat hogs @ $10.00 ea ------- 100.00 40 head stock hogs - 100.00 1 yellow sorrel mare - 60.00 1 ball' bright sorrel mare - 80.00 1 sorrel mare 3 years old - 40.00 1 colt $20.00 - 1 dun horse $75.00 ------ 95.00 1 bureau $20.00 - 1 clock $ 25.00 ------ 45.00 farming utensils - 15.00 kitchen furniture - 25.00 ------------------------------------------------------- $2,892.00 Inventory commenced and closed on this twenty-first day of January 1840-The whole amounting in re-capitulation to the sum of $2,892.00. All done in the presence of William W. Beeler and Felix Bosworth- NOTE FROM TRANSCRIBER: There was further data on this succession concerning the sale of the effects (Sept 28, 1840) and the appointment of tutors for the minor children. William Bladen became tutor of Lorenzo & Mary Ann. Malaica Lefever (nee Dempsey) became tutor of minor Mahala Dempsey.
