Timmerman. The elder Averetts were born and raised in Alabama, he serving as a gallant soldier in the Fifteenth Alabama Confederate Infantry. David F. Averett served principally in Virginia and Maryland, taking part in many engagements. He narrowly escaped death when shot in the forehead, the bullet passing under the skin and exiting at the other side of the forehead. He was a stalwart democrat, a United Confederate Veteran, and devout Baptist. Their children were John Rufus, a blacksmith; Maude, wife of J. R. Watts, a Winnfield, Louisiana merchant; D. E., a farmer of Gilmer, Texas; Pearl, wife of W. A. Stamper, of Natchitoches; Emma, wife of J. S. Spiker; William Oscar; Walter W., Clarence, a printer; Edna, wife of C. E. Sompayrac, and Kate, wife of William Baker. William O. was educated in local schools and at an early age took up carpentry. By 1906 he had settled in Winnfield, Louisiana where he became a civic leader and a leader in the construction industry. His political allegiance was strongly in favor of the democrats and he and his family were staunch Baptists. He served as an official on his church's building committee and was affiliated with the Knights of Pythias. In 1907, he married Miss Alma Perkins, daughter of H. J. Perkins, of Winnfield, and the Averett's had two children, Walter Merle and Mildred Katherine. Mr. Averett erected many of the modern buildings in early Winnfield, including the Methodist and Baptist churches. (Source: Chambers' History of Louisiana, 1925.
