Waddell, Representative of Winn, was born in Hillsboro, Orange Co., North Carolina in 1830. He was educated in a high school and the Caldwell Institute, and was one of the graduates of the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia, session of 1853-54. Dr. Waddell is the sone of the late Hugh Waddell and is the elder brother of Hon. A. M. Waddell, M. C., of North Carolina. On his maternal side he is descended from Governor James Moore of South Carolina and Alfred Moore of North Carolina, a Justice of the United States Supreme Court. On his paternal side from Lt. General Waddell of the British Army and General Francis Nash, killed at the Battle of Germantown. Shortly after graduation he came to Louisiana and established himself at Natchitoches where he was made Parish Physician. He subsequently returned to North Carolina where he remained during the war, caring for the sick and wounded soldiers. He returned to Louisiana in 1868 and has resided in Winn, whose people, in acknowledgment of his worth, have elected him their Representative in the General Assembly. Dr. Waddell is a modest, unassuming gentleman and possesses a vast fund of general information. He is a warm advocate of education and is passing a bill for the appointment of an active practical Geologist with a view of bringing to light the vast mineral resources of our state. Through his efforts notice is being attracted to the discovery of a rich marble quarry in his parish. We have no doubt that his eminently practical suggestions will be adopted. He loves his parish and his adopted state with the fervor that might be expected of a gentleman of his stamp and he is destined to occupy a high place in the confidence of his colleagues and of the people of the state.
