She is a nurse epidemiologist who has written a book on her field called "Asepsis: The Right Touch." After graduating from Northwestern with a masters degree, Mrs. Crow was able to get in to this field "on the ground floor," she says. Since then she has served as consultant to the United States Surgeon General, C. Everett Koop, and traveled all over the world. Articles she has written have appeared in many medical journals including the well known Journal of the American Medical Association. In total, she has had 87 articles published. Mrs. Crow felt the need for the book because of all the requests for answers she received at the many lectures she gave. The need for protection from infectious disease both for patients and health care workers has never been more apparent. "Patients who enter a hospital have a 5% chance of contracting infection there," Mrs. Crow stated. From those statistics it is easily seen how much more at risk health care specialists, doctors, nurses, dentists, and others would be. Her book is also directed to workers in a nursing home setting since they, too, are working in a health oriented field. "This book is for anyone who is in health care. It explains how to protect the patient from infection as well as how to prevent infection to the health care workers." Mrs. Crow said this book will be an interesting and valuable gift for friends and family members who work in health care. It contains information to help in understanding the concept of being free from infection. It deals with the moral and ethical issue of infection control and the attitudes of health care workers to infection control. "I used a light touch in trying to help in understanding the problems faced," Mrs. Crow said. She also stated in another interview that they were by no means trying to single out the AIDS patient. The same technique is used for all infectious diseases. In the introduction, the book mentions that her purpose in writing was to describe practices "that first do no harm." Further, the book looks at decontamination, sterilization, employee health clinics, microbiology and other topics. It details 101 ways to reduce health care costs. Sue Crow's mother, Mrs. Bessie Dearmon, still lives in Winn Parish. Her father was the late J. M. Dearmon of Sikes. Anyone who wishes to purchase a book will find it available at Medic Pharmacy. It is a 200 page volume designed for nurses, doctors, dentists and nursing home workers.
