P. Dr. George A. Stokes, an academic dean at Northwestern State University for the past 20 years, has been appointed as NSU's new vice-president of university affairs. NSU President Dr. Joseph J. Orze said Stokes, whose appointment was approved this week by the Board of Trustees for Louisiana Colleges and Universities, will be responsible for all of the support service areas of the university. Stokes has been dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Northwestern since 1968. He also served for one year as dean of academic affairs and for four years as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. A native of Winnfield, Stokes has been a member of the NSU faculty since 1949 and presently holds the title of professor of geography. He is considered an authority on historical geography of the United States, military history, and the history and archaeology of the Natchitoches area. Northwestern's new vice president received the Ph.D. in geography and anthropology from Louisiana State University in 1954. He also earned the master's degree in geology from LSU in 1948 and the bachelor's degree in social studies from Northwestern in 1942. Stokes' honors include membership in Sigma Xi, Phi Alpha Theta, Phi Kappa Phi, Blue Key, Phi Eta Sigma, and the Geological and Mining Society of American Universities. In 1971, the U. S. Department of the Army awarded Stokes the Certificate of Appreciation for Patriotic Civilian Service. The former dean, who is the author of more than 30 articles and book reviews, is listed in Who's Who in America, American Men of Science, Leaders in Education, and Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans.
