Seeking descendants of these families and oral histories. History of Stroud line begins in Londonderry area, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland. There was a Thomas Stroude (English-may have come out of Devonshire or Essex Co. England, see Strodes) who served as a Halberdier (Battle Ax wielder) in a seige of Londonderry, Antrim, Northern Ireland, which routed Irish people from their fertile lands, under command of the King of England, 20 Sep. 1622. Thomas received some Irish land in town of Coleraine, Co. Antrim, N. Ireland. Next Stroud in Irish Transcripts is Serj. Joseph Strawde/Stroude who served in Seige of Londonderry, 15 Apr. 1657, listed on census of Co. Down, Antrim N. Ireland, 1689. Could be ancestors of William Stroud father of William Stroud who migrated to America. 1st Gen. in America William Stroud b. c. 1730-31, Ireland, served in French/Indian Wars in South Carolina Rangers, 2 July 1762 got paid by Capt. John Dargan. William returned to Ireland to collect Sarah___and children, returned on ship Snow Betty Gregg, which left Larne, Antrim, N. Ireland 4 Oct 1767, and arrived before 2 Feb. 1768 in Charlestown, South Carolina. He was sued in abstentia for debts and promisory note he signed, probably incurred during Ranger Service . Suit filed by Peter Robertson in Berkeley Co. S. Car. 1767. William Stroud received a land survey in 1768, and a Royal Land grant for 450 acres in Craven Co. S. Car. along Rockey Creek.(which later became Camden Dist. and finally Chester Co. S. Car.) During this time 100 acres was for head of household and 50 acres for wife and each child not an infant. William Stroud may have worked off indenture (rec. free land but passage was 2-4 pounds stirling), then went to land in 1771. He sold the land to Rev. William Martin, who brought 5 boatloads of Scotch-Irish Presbyterian Covenantors to S. Car. excaping persecution. The Rev. Martin built Catholic Presbyterian Church on that land. William Stroud (listed as a Jr. on land grant 1775so assume his father was William Stroud in Ireland) then purchased three tracts of land from Jean Grimes, Andrew and Matthew Grims, which were Irish certified in 1775. William Stroud served as constable of Camden Dist. and Chester Co. for about 15 years. The Rev. William Martin listed William Stroud Srs. sons as Will (William Jr. (III)), Jack (John) Tom (Thomas) Hamp (Hampton) Hardy (who was born on the ship coming over Erby (Yerby/Irby) Ransom, Anzel (Ancil) and two sisters not named (Nancy and Unknown). The reason they were mentioned at all, William Martin was trying to gain support for rebellion against British rule. The Strouds were supporters of the cause in June 1780. William Stroud served as wagoneer militiaman, bringing munitions and food stuffs to troops. Son William Stroud Jr. killed more of the enemy than any other man in S. Car. and was captured by the British and hung Aug. 1780. His body was left for three weeks, his mother, and a sister, along with either Capt. Lacey or Land helped cut him down and bury him beneath the hanging tree during a dark moon night. (A plaque on Hwy. 95, just outside Richburg S. Car. honors his sacrifice). John Stroud served honorable and was paid for service. Thomas Stroud also served honorabley and was paid for service. Hampton Stroud was wounded in wrist and a musket ball to shoulder and was captured by British, threatened with hanging like his brother, and put on a Prison ship off the coast of S. Car., to be released after end of Rev. War. William Stroud Sr. was also wounded in the left shoulder with a musket ball which migrated to his hip, and was removed surgically. He applied for pension in 1811, but died Dec. 1812 aged over 80 years. His son Hardy Stroud asked for medical and burial expenses and they were granted, as Gen.
