Masons Judge Harwell L. Allen of Winnfield was elected and installed as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the State of Louisiana, Free and Accepted Masons, in ceremonies held in the Masonic Temple Building at 333 St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans, Tuesday, February 8. The office of Grand Master is the highest Masonic office one can hold in the State of Louisiana. Judge Allen is the first and only Grand Master of Masons in Louisiana from Winn or Grant Parishes to be elected since the establishment of the Grand Lodge of Louisiana in 1812. Harwell Leonard Allen was born on October 1, 1916, in Bernice, Louisiana, the son of the late Asa Leonard Allen and Mrs. Lottie Mae Thompson Allen. His father, Asa Leonard Allen, was a life long resident of Winn Parish, a member of Eastern Star Lodge No. 151, and represented the Eighth Congressional District of Louisiana in Congress from 1936 until 1953. In 1954 he was elected Judge of the Eighth Judicial District of Louisiana composed of Winn and Grant Parishes and has continued to serve as Judge since that date. He is a member of the First Baptist Church of Winnfield, where he has taught the Men's' Bible Class for almost 25 years. He is married to Elaine Smith Wells of Winnfield, Louisiana and they have three children: Mary Lynn, Kay, and Douglas. He was made a Master Mason in Eastern Star Lodge No. 151, Winnfield, on July 3, 1946, and served as Worshipful Master when its new Masonic Temple was constructed in 1966. He is a member of Winnfield Chapter No. 59, Royal Arch Masons, Winnfield Council No. 43, Royal and Select Masters, Bethlehem Commandery No. 20, Knights Templar, and El Karubah Temple. He is also a member of Monroe Consistory, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, and was coroneted an Inspector General Honorary, 33rd Degree, in October, 1969. After being installed as Grand Master, Judge Allen appointed the following to serve as officers of the Grand Lodge during the ensuing year: W. Warren "Chris" Allen of Winnfield, Grand Marshal; Latnie L. Brewton of Winnfield, Grand Senior Deacon; Boothie A. Futrell of Colfax, Grand Junior Deacon; J. W. Kennedy, Jr. of Winnfield, Grand Sword Bearer; Stanley Branch of Sikes, District Deputy Grand Master of District Five.
