Averette Local Citizen 89 Years Old Today He Celebrates His Birthday. Keeps Fit By Exercise One of the oldest citizens of Winnfield by reason of years is David Francis Averette, Confederate Veteran, who has reached his 89th birthday, today, Friday February 25th. At this ripe old age Mr. Averette is hale and hearty and energetic. He works his garden, never has a horse and plow it, but spades it himself, and afterwards uses a garden plow. He makes all necessary repairs on his house and fence and when asked to what he attributes his active old age, he replied that plenty of exercise in the open air and regular habits in eating and sleeping had kept him fit. Mr. Averette has a splendid war record, serving in the Infantry, 15 Alabama Regiment from 61 to 65 under Lee and Jackson. On May 6, 1864 he was wounded at the Battle of Wilderness in Virginia and his wife who is now 80 years old says she is proud of that bullet wound in his forehead for it shows that he was facing the enemy. After this wound Mr. Averette did no more field service, but was detailed for courier service. It was during the time of convalescence and recuperation from his wounds that he was married to Miss Martha A. Timmerman in Alabama on December 8, 1864, three weeks after going back to his regiment in Virginia where he remained until he was given an honorable discharge at the close of the war. Mr. and Mrs. Averette have been married 62 years, have reared a large and useful family and now are happy in their old age. They moved to Winnfield about 13 years ago.
