Submitted by Peggy Chandler Beaubouef] Issue No. 12 March, 1997 [Photo of Alfaras Onus & Harriett Mott Garrett (seated) and their children (l-r seated) Onus, Sug, (standing) Jessie, Edward, and Patrick.] HISTORICAL NOTES: Pictured above is yet another pioneer family of this community, Alfaras Onus and Harriett Mott Garrett (seated) and their children (l-r seated) Onus, Sug, (standing) Jessie, Edward, and Patrick. Alfaras (pronounced Alphus) Garrett was the son of James Washington and Sarah Garrett. James W. Garrett was a teacher and a Baptist minister (helped organize Sardis Baptist Church and preached at Bethlehem). According to his g.g. grandson, John Edward Garrett, James Washington Garrett and his daughter, Nancy, assisted in the distribution of Confederate currency during the Civil War by cutting the sheets of newly printed Confederate bills apart as they came off the press. Alfaras Onus Garrett was born 2 March 1856 in Mississippi. Quoting from his obituary at "about the age of 21, moved to Winn Parish and settled near the Mar's Hill Community, later moving to Wattsville where he engaged in farming until his death..." Sometime before 1879 he met and married Miss Harriett Mott of Winn Parish. To this union were born the following children: 1) Edward Thomas Garrett b. 1879, d. 25 Jul 1964, married Hattie Eugene Thomas 11 Dec 1904. Their children were Brithol, Douglas Elonzo, Hubbard Edward, Winnie Ophelia, Smith Newell, and Thomas Parker Garrett. 2) Jessie Belle Garrett b. 16 Oct 1886, d. 26 Jun 1929, married J.A. McQuillin 2 Aug 1904. Their children were Myrtle, Alma, Tamar, Bernice, Clyde, Arvel, and Virgil McQuillin. 3) Patrick L. Garrett b. 17 March 1889, d. 15 Feb 1973, married Etta Griffin 18 Dec 1910. Pat and Etta had one child, Dewey. Etta died in 1943 and Pat married a second time to Nola Thomas. 4) Sug Garrett b. 17 Sep 1892, d. 2 Mar 1945, married Jeanette B. Griffin 26 Nov 1913. Sug and Jeanette had the following children: Gladys, Eugene, Johnnie, Willie, and Joyce. 5) Onus Moffitt Garrett b. 1899, d. 1974, married Pearl Griffin 28 Jan 1920. Onus and Pearl had two children, Irma and Onus Jr. (Buck). Pearl Garrett died in 1925 and Onus married again to Bessie Frazier Pavey 14 Nov 1936. Alfaras Garrett departed this life 11 May 1927 and his wife Harriett, 29 Nov 1932. Mr. and Mrs. A.O. Garrett and four of their children are buried in Bethlehem Cemetery.
