William Robert Gage, who has served there for 25 years. Friends are invited to attend a reception in his honor from 3 to 5 p.m. September 7 in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Mayor Jack Henderson has proclaimed September 7 as "Brother Gate Day" and this week the mayor presented Rev. Gage with the keys to the City of Winnfield. He also presented the pastor a certificate for recognition of his outstanding service to the community. Rev. Gage has served for over 30 years in Red River Presbytery (now Presbytery of the Pines). His first pastorate was in Alabama Presbyterian Church near Choudrant in Lincoln Parish. He was the first pastor of Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church near Austin, Texas, serving there briefly before returning to Red River Presbytery in September of 1955. After graduating from Wells High School at age 16, Rev. Gage attended Austin College and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He graduated in 1950 from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary with a Bachelor of Divinity degree. Rev. Gage also served as a marine in World War II at Okinawa and in North China, from 1944 to 1946. The Presbyterian pastor has been active in Winnfield civic affairs, including participation in the Kiwanis Club, where he was a past president. He is a 25 year member of the VFW and also helped to organize the Winnfield service unit of the Salvation Army, an organization he has chaired since 1970. He is presently on the Winn Parish Jury Commission, the Council on Aging board, and has served as representative on the Board of Supervisors of Elections. Rev. Gage is married to Patrician Anthony Gage, from Austin, Texas, a graduate of the University of Texas. The Gage's three children are William Robert Gage, Jr., who works with Murphy Oil Company in El Dorado, Arkansas, Edwin Gage, a photographer in Shreveport, and Patricia A. Bentley of Salisaw, Oklahoma. The Gage children are all graduates of Louisiana Tech University. During Rev. Gage's pastorate in Winnfield and at Alabama Presbyterian, new churches were built. He followed Rev. Alwin Stokes at the First Presbyterian Church in Winnfield. "We've been privileged to live in a good community," Rev. Gage stated. "This town provides the opportunity for growth and development and we're proud to be part of Winnfield."
