Gamble, merchant and planter, of St. Maurice, la., is an excellent example of what can be accomplished through energy and perseverance, for he has won his way to his present position through his own unaided efforts. He was born in White County, Tenn., December 12, 1852, to Charles R. and Emily F. (Cameron) Gamble, the former of whom was born at Meigs County, Tenn., in 1829, and died at Sparta, Tenn. In 1859. His wife first saw the light of day in White County, Tenn., in 1834, and is now making her home in Putnam County, Tenn. E. J. Gamble is the eldest of their four children, two being now alive; was reared to the arduous duties of the farm, but was given the advantages of the common public schools, later competing his education, and spending two years at Chatata Seminary, in Tennessee, where he made the best of his opportunities. He became self supporting at the age of thirteen years, but continued to earn his own living in Tennessee until 1873, when he came to Louisiana upon a borrowed capital of $45, settling in Natchitoches Parish, where he has since made his home. He is the owner of a good plantation in Ward 4, and has under cultivation 275 acres, but the most of his attention is given to general merchandising, at St. Maurice, his establishment being opened to the public in 1886. It is excellently managed, is well fitted up and has an extensive and lucrative trade. He has truly been the architect of his own fortune, and is now worth about $22,000, all of which has been earned by good business ability, industry and far sightedness. He was appointed postmaster of St. Maurice, in 1886, and is still filling the position in a very satisfactory manner. His marriage took place in 1875, and was to Miss Anna K. Harrison, who was born in Caldwell Parish, La., in the month of January, 1856, and has borne her husband four children: Harry P., Emma J., Sarah S. and E. Lillian. Mr. Gamble is a Democrat in politics and is one of the enterprising residents of the parish.
