Moore (2/11/1906 to present), who is still living on original homestead of Henry Hyde & Amanda Hyde. Also from records and notes from my grandfather, Ben Elbert Melton (11/20/1889 - 11/16/1979) who was raised with and knew most of the older Hydes. Also from census of Liberty Chapel Cemetery. Hyde Families of Winn & Grant Parish: Due to the passage of years and absence of records from the 1850 - 1880 settlement of the Winn-Grant border area, this is a recap of events/personal family stories. FIRST GENERATION: Father & Mother Migrated to area from Georgia. Names unknown. SECOND GENERATION: Three sons and two daughters known. (1) Henry Hyde - born prior to 1850 - died prior to 1911. Henry Hyde is buried in the Hyde Cemetery located in Grant Parish at the intersection corners of Secs 4/5,T9N,R2W Grant Parish and Secs 32/33, T10,R2W Winn Parish. This old cemetery borders the old Harrisonburg-Natchitoches Rd used by early settlers migrating through. (2) Robert Hyde - (1853 - Aug/1927)-aged 74 years - buried at Clarence, La. (3) Newt Hyde - birth/death dates unknown - moved to Monroe,La (4) & (5) two daughters - Mrs.M.M. Fisher & Mrs. Lou Smith THIRD GENERATION: Note: Henry Hyde was married twice and had two sets of children. FIRST MARRIAGE:Married Callie Harper prior to 1870 and had at least two sons. Her dates and burial place are unknown. (1) John T. Hyde -born about 1870 - died unknown date -buried at Liberty Chapel (2) James Milton Hyde - (1873- 2/23/1955) - buried at Winnfield Cemetery FOURTH GENERATION: from first marriage: Father- John T. Hyde- see above dates. Married Carrie Allbright (8/29/1872 -2/23/1924). She was the daughter of John A. Allbright (1828-2/18/1908) and Mrs. L.V. Allbright (1842 - 10/24/1918). Her parents are buried at Liberty Chapel with dated headstones on these graves. They had at least eight children. Home location was next to Iatt Creek in the NE corner of Sec 1, T8N, R3W Grant Parish just SE of the Winn/Grant boundary line corner. This location is just South of USFS Rd.558. Location was known as the Selma Camp area and John Hyde operated a store here. The Tide, La area referred to in some documents was located some five miles from here. Known children: Albert M. Hyde-(4/25/1893-12/10/1957)- moved to another location in Grant parish Walter L. Hyde - (10/19/1894 - 8/20/1950) - lived on old homeplace Tom N. Hyde - (1896 - 12/98) - Winnfield Fire Chief - buried in Winnfield Cemetery Charlie Andrew Hyde - (3/22/1899 - 5/02/1908) - died young Willie Hyde - (5/22/1906 - 5/29/1910) - died young Sam Hyde - dates unknown - was living in 1928 John Hyde - "Little John" - dates unknown - moved away - married a Miss Sherwood Mrs. A.C. Cavender - surname unknown - married & moved to Bernice, La. All of the above, except for John, Tom and Mrs. Cavender are buried at Liberty Chapel. There are no markers for John T. Hyde and Sam Hyde. After one of their associates, Monroe Bratton was killed in a gunfight at the Winnfield Courthouse in 1928 between local neighbors and members of the Hyde family evolving from their involvement in an organized cattle/livestock rustling & slaughter operation, the home site in Grant Parish was abandoned. John T. Hyde moved to Williana and Walter & Sam Hyde moved to Arkansas to avoid prosecution and reprisals from local residents from which cattle and other livestock had been stolen. They never returned. Father - James Milton Hyde - (1873 - 2/23/1955) - moved to Winnfield in 1902 and was a respected store owner and civic leader for over fifty years until his death. (See obituary article in archives) - Married Addie Scarborough and was survived by two children: Mrs. Tracy Harrell and James Hyde. Buried in the Winnfield Cemetery. FIFTH GENERATION: From first marriage: Father - Albert M.Hyde - married Marie Dean (11/23/1907 - 5/01/1988): Unnamed daughter - b/d 4/11/1929 Albert M. Hyde,Jr. - (8/18/1921 - 4/30/1945) - both buried at Liberty Chapel THIRD GENERATION: from second marriage of Henry Hyde: SECOND MARRIAGE: Married Elizabeth Amanda Moore - (11/15/1858 - 10/29/1911)- date of marriage is unknown. Amanda Moore was a sister to John D. Moore and raised in the Moore Community located in Sec 21, T10N,R2W of Winn Parish. They had five children to reach adulthood and five that died in infancy. Both Henry and Amanda Hyde are buried in the Hyde Cemetery - her marker is dated - his is not. All of these children were raised near Caney Branch on the homestead located in the W/2 of SW/4 of Sec 32, T10N, R2W Winn Parish. This was just North of the old road known as Harrisonburg-Natchitoches Rd which was the original Winn/Grant boundary. Subsistence was provided by a large farming operation. Children from this marriage: George Wes Hyde - born about 1879 - died about 1918 - buried at Hyde Cemetery with a blank marker. Wes moved from this border area to land near the Lasoyne Cemetery by Iatt Creek in Sec 23, T9N, R3W in Grant Parish. Eben (Ebb) Hyde-(9/01/1881 - 5/12/1970) - buried at Liberty Chapel. Ebb settled on land located in Sec 9, T8N, R2W in Grant Parish just North of Liberty Chapel. Ben Hyde - dates unknown - left the area and moved to Phoenix, Arizona, Buried there. Althea Hyde - unknown dates - married name of Taylor - buried in Oxnard, California. Jack Hyde - unknown dates - moved to Ventura, California - buried there. Others: Five infants in orderly graves - Hyde Cemetery - no dates/names FOURTH GENERATION: from second marriage of Henry Hyde: George Wes Hyde - father- name of wife unknown - had two sons ( George and Mert) and one daughter - Clara. Eben (Ebb) Hyde - father -married Eva Dean- (9/22/1891 - 3/30/1984) - they had one child, Tharon E. Hyde (11/07/1912 - 3/24/1977). Althea Hyde - married Jess Gray and had three children: Arnold, Leon and Ethel. Was widowed and remarried a Taylor and moved to California. No further known. Status of children for Ben and Jack Hyde is unknown - all out of state. FIFTH GENERATION: from second marriage of Henry Hyde: Tharon E. Hyde - married Julia M. (4/04/1917 - 11/04/1983) -- one daughter
