Ingles, Hale and Hearty, Celebrates 103 Birthday July 5 July 5th marked the 103rd birthday of J. B. Ingles, who is probably the oldest citizen in Winn Parish. Born in Indiana July 5th, 1829, Mr. Ingles came to Louisiana soon after the Civil War and settled in Winn Parish. Hale and hearty and quite active, Mr. Ingles is able to relate many interesting incidents of his life. He served in the Union Army during the conflict between the states and five additional years following the close of the war. He fought in the Indian Wars in which his father and brothers were killed. The father was with General Custer, who was sent against the Indians and successfully conquered them in the Sioux War. His interest in affairs while not as keen as in former years, is remarkable and his memory of old friends something of a marvel for his years. (This name was believed to be originally "Engle" as spelled on this veterans military records which I have examined. He had and has many descendants in the area.
