Mitchell Named LTA President Dr. John H. Mitchell, a native of the Wheeling Community in Ward 5 of Winn Parish, was elected to head the Louisiana Teachers' Association at the State Teachers' Convention in Shreveport during the past week. Dr. Mitchell is a graduate of the Atlanta High School. He did his degree work at LSU receiving three degrees, including his Ph. D. His first teaching position was at the Sikes High School where he taught vocational agriculture. He later transferred to Winnfield High School. From Winnfield Mitchell went to the State Department of Education. He later went to the University of Southwestern Louisiana where he has served as professor and as Department Head for the past 15 years. Dr. Mitchell is married and the father of preschool age twin daughters. His wife is an elementary teacher in Lafayette. The schools of Winn Parish were dismissed for the week to allow the Winn Parish teachers to participate in the Convention and to observe Thanksgiving holidays. Three of the five days missed will be made up. The issue causing the most talk at the Convention was the proposed merger of the L. T. A. with the all black L. E. A. The white L. T. A. took the first step toward the accomplishment of the proposal.
