Note: For persons noted as still living, this was as of the preparation date of this article ( 7/27/1999 ). This is a summary of five generations dating from the early settlement of Winn Parish. Exact dates are ? for some family members. Johnnie E. Moore Family History First Generation: Great-Grandparents M. Whitfield Moore - born about 1825 in Alabama - died before 1880 Dicy (Nee ?) Moore - born about 1833 in Alabama - died before 1880 It is known that two children were born in Alabama and one in Ark, prior to their emigration to Winn Parish in the 1860's. Reportedly, the parents are buried somewhere in the northern part of Winn Parish - there are no records found of their residence or burial site. Second Generation:Children of the above: John D. Moore,Sr -( 12/14/1853 - 12/09/1948 ) James Filmore Moore - ( 6/22/1856 - 5/27/1940 ) Amanda M. Moore - ( 11/15/1858 - 10/29/1911 ) Sabre Ann Moore - ( 11/25/1862 - 2/03/1952 ) Benjamin F. Moore - ( ? 1866 - died unknown date ) Ida Moore - ( ? 1868 - died unknown date ) William Thomas Moore - ( ? 1869 - 1/24/1939 ) Oliver M. Moore - ( 1870 - 1958 ) Second Generation: Grandparents of Johnnie E. Moore Note: John D. Moore,Sr was married three times & had two sets of children. John D. Moore,Sr - see above - Buried in Pleasant Hill (Killen) Cemetery Wife # 1: Sarah Florence Melton - ( 1/01/1851 - 1/13/1887 ). Married 5/09/1875. Died in childbirth. Parents of Sarah Florence Melton were Madison M. Melton ( 11/8/1827 - 4/16/1893 ) and Susan Caroline Swain (Melton) ( 11/17/1830 - 8/25/1905 ). Both were born in Marion County, Georgia and emigrated to Winn Parish as the original Melton Family patriachs. Madison Melton was a Confederate soldier. Sarah F. & her parents are buried in the Melton Cemetery located in the SE/4 - SW/4 of Sec 17, T10N, R2W Winn Parish. John D. Moore,Sr homesteaded 120 acres located in the NW/4 of Sec 21, T10N, R2W Winn Parish after his marriage to Sarah F. Melton. This is East of the US 167 railroad underpass. All of their children were born here. Property is owned by Johnnie E. Moore. This was the site of the original Moore Community. Children of this marriage were: Infant #1 - unknown date Infant #2 - unknown date Infant #3 - unknown date - Note: these are buried in Pleasant Hill Cem. George W. Moore - ( 1/29/1878 - 1/31/1955 ) - buried at Melton Cem. Cleola Moore - unknown dates - buried at Tioga Matthew W. Moore - ( 11/11/1884 - 3/01/1970 ) - buried at Melton Cem. Infant #4 - b/d 1/13/1887 - buried at Melton Cem. Third Generation: Parents Father: George W. Moore - ( 1/29/1878 - 1/31/1955 ) Mother: Sallie Olliver Moore - ( 8/25/1882 - 1/25/1973 ). She was born near Cane River in Natchitoches Parish. Both are buried in Melton Cem. George W. Moore homesteaded 160 acres located in the SW/4 of Sec 22, T10N, R2W Winn Parish and their first two children were born there. This home place is the present location of Pleasant Hill (Killen) Cem. and is owned by GW Moore heirs (80 acres in E/2 of SW/4). George W. Moore bought 160 acres in 1908 that was located in the NW/4 of Sec 6, T9N, R2W Grant parish some five miles distant. The family then moved to the Blackland area on Bear Creek near the old Allbright Prarie area. The rest of their children were born here. Subsistence was by farming and stock. After 1936, George & Sallie moved to Blanchard, La where both died. Both are buried at the Melton Cemetery. Grant Parish property is owned by heirs. Children of this marriage were: Thermon Moore - ( 10/27/1904 - 12/27/1918 ) - died in hunting accident - Buried at Melton Cem. with his parents. Johnnie Edgar Moore - (2/11/1906 - living ) Thedous Marie Moore (Lyles) - ( 9/26/1908 - living )- in Shreveport George A. Moore - ( 9/27/1912 - living )- in Shreveport Herman W. Moore - ( 5/10/1919 - living )- in Shreveport Vera Moore (Grimmett) - ( 12/10/1922 - 5/30/1997 ) Sarah Moore - ( 2/02/1924 - living )- in Shreveport Fourth Generation: Johnnie E. Moore Husband: Johnnie E. Moore - see above Wife: Frances Eloise Houston ( 1/10/1910 - living ) - born near Goodpine, La. Married 5/27/1936. Her father was Issac Newton Houston (died in 1955) who was a bookkeeper for Buchanan RR Co and their sawmills. He later owned/operated Central Wholesale Co in Shreveport, La as a building materials supply company. Johnnie E. Moore moved to Shreveport in 1936, married and worked at Central Wholesale from 11/1936 until retirement in 1973. Then he moved back to the old Henry Hyde/Amanda Moore Hyde homeplace located in the W/2 of SW/4 of Sec 32, T10N, R2W Winn Parish that he bought in 1949. His wife rotates stays between their home in Shreveport and the "Moore Hilton Camp". After four score and thirteen years, he remains active and drives his pickup truck and Honda 4-wheeler on a daily basis. He is the senior resident of the Winn/Grant Parish border area. He became a Master Mason on 5/23/1939 in Joppa Lodge 362, and received a 50 year membership certificate on 5/23/1989 from The Grand Lodge of Louisiana Joppa Lodge 362. His membership in the El Karuba Temple of Shreveport Shrine is dated 11/30/1974. Fifth Generation: Children of Johnnie E. & Frances Moore: John Earl Moore - ( 9/26/1937 ) - 3 children & 6 grandchildren Robert Moore - ( 6/04/1940 ) - 2 children Tommy H. Moore - ( 8/10/1943 ) - 2 children Jerry L. Moore - ( 5/03/1945 ) - 1 child Clyde O. Moore - ( 4/07/1947 ) - 2 children Total descendants: 5 children, 10 grandchildren, 6 g/grandchildren Total # of generations: Seven This part concludes the direct family lineage path of JE Moore family. Moved to Oak Grove, La area where they had 8 children ( 6 girls & 2 boys). All are deceased now. James F. & Laura buried in West Carroll Parish. Amanda Moore (Hyde) - ( 11/15/1858 - 10/29/1911 ). Born in Alabama - moved to Winn Parish in 1860's. Married Henry Hyde ( third wife ). Had 5 children to survive infancy & 5 died in infancy. Sabre Ann Moore (McBride) - ( 10/25/1862 - 2/03/1952 ) - born in Ark - raised in Winn Parish - married J.H. McBride and settled near Montgomery, La. They had 8 children ( 6 girls & 2 boys). She is buried at Brown Cem, near Sardis. Dates on headstone of JH McBride are ( 9/27/1859 - 1/04/1931). Graves of two children are marked. Bryant W. McBride ( 1886 - 1967 ) and James T. McBride ( 4/28/1892 - 12/30/1948 ). Two more gravesites in the family row are marked by rocks. Benjamin F. Moore - ( ? 1866 - unknown death date ) - moved to California Ida Moore - ( ? 1868 - unknown death date ) - moved to New Orleans William Thomas Moore - ( ? 1869 - 1/24/1939 ). Married Della V. McIlwain ( 1/22/1880 - 5/04/1968 ) on 5/12/1895. Homesteaded near Montgomery, La where they had 9 children ( 6 boys & 3 girls ). Buried at Hebron Cem near Montgomery. Oliver M. Moore - (1870 - 1958 ) - buried at Brown Cemetery near Sardis next to Sabra Moore McBride. Third Generation: Direct aunts/uncles of Johnnie E. Moore from first marriage of John D. Moore,Sr. Cleola Moore - b/d dates unknown. First marriage: Married Charlie Lowery and had two children : Charlie and Earl. Second marriage: Married Trav Merritt and moved to Tioga area. Had seven children ( 4 boys & 3 girls ): Rudolph - Ollie - Woodie - Sarah - Dadea - Truett - unknown name. She is buried at Tioga. Matthew W. Moore- ( 11/11/1884 - 3/01/1970 ). Married Katie McDonald ( 8/19/1893 - 2/01/1987 ) on 3/28/1909. They had no children. Both are buried in the Melton Cemetery.Matt worked in a sawmill at Tioga. After their marriage, he bought 80 acres in the E/2 of NE/4 of Sec 1, T9N, R3W Winn Parish from Mrs. Sally Hagen, great-aunt of Mrs. GW Moore. This adjoined (across parish line) the George W. Moore property. In the 1940's, he bought 80 acres on the Packton-Alex Rd in the E/2 of NE/4 of Sec 35, T10N, R3W where they lived until his death. Third Generation: Note: Half-brothers & sisters of George W. Moore from other marriages of John D. Noore,Sr. John D. Moore, Sr - see above Wife #2 - Married Alice Philan - b/d dates unknown after first wife died in childbirth. Married less than one year - no further known - no children. Wife #3: Eliza Jane Wilder Moore - ( 12/16/1875 - 8/15/1950 ). Marriage date is unknown. Lived on the original 120 acre homestead at Moore. Both are buried at Pleasant Hill Cem. Children from this marriage: Maudie Moore - ( 4/05/1900 - 2/04/1983 ). Married Archie Jordan (3/22/1895 - 11/28/1973 ) and lived in Jordan Hill. Both buried at Jordan Hill Cemetery. Anne Mae Moore - ( 11/09/1901 - 12/25/1990 ). Married Wise E. Smith ( 9/18/1891 - 1/20/1956 ). Both buried at Jordan Hill Cemetery. Whit F. Moore - ( 5/10/1903 - 7/28/1925 ) - buried at Pleasant Hill Cem. John D. Moore,Jr - unknown dates - moved to Texas - buried there. Wade Moore - unknown dates - buried at Sikes. Leon Moore - ( 11/04/1909 - 8/19/1986 ). Married on 8/08/1936 to Bernice Maxey ( 5/02/1916 - living ). Leon is buried at Jordan Hill Cem. Sally Moore - birth date unknown - still living. Married Nelson Coburn. William L. Moore - ( 7/17/1917 - 5/21/1922 ) - buried at Pleasant Hill Cem.
