Kilpatrick of Northwestern State University has announced the appointment of John M. Price, a native of Winnfield, as director of special collection for Eugene P. Watson Library at NSU. Price will also serve as assistant professor of social science and director of the Louisiana Studies Institute, Kilpatrick said. Price is the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Price of the Bethlehem Community, Winn Parish. In his position as director of special collections Price will coordinate the library's vast collection of archives, manuscripts, and rare books. NSU librarian Donald MacKenzie said Price will also be in charge of Northwestern's extensive Louisiana Collection, which includes the newly acquired Melrose Collection. Price will serve as managing editor of "Louisiana Studies", a quarterly journal published by the Louisiana Studies Institute to encourage original research in various fields which contribute to a great knowledge of Louisiana. A graduate of Calvin High School in 1960, Price recently completed his doctoral work in history at Louisiana State University, studying under Pulitzer Prize winning historian T. Harry Williams. He earned his master's degree from LSU in 1969. For the past two years, Price has been head of the Department of Archives and Manuscripts at LSU. After receiving his bachelor's degree from LSU in 1964, Price remained at the university as a teaching assistant in the History Department. During his graduate work at LSU, he was assistant to the editor of "Louisiana History." Price is past president of the LSU chapter of Phi Alpha Theta and holds membership in the Baton Rouge Civil War Round Table, American Historical Association, Southern Historical Association and Louisiana Historical Association. He has lectured widely on slavery, Southern history, historiography, and U. S. archives and manuscripts. Price has also authored numerous articles for publication in professional journals.
