HIGHLIGHTS OF MINUTES OF THE CENTRAL BAPTIST ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING ZION HILL CHURCH, OCTOBER, 1860 Saturday, Oct. 6, 1860 - - - - - - - - - - - - Introductory sermon by Eld. James Buys. Called to order by Eld. James Buys, prayer by Eld. A. Bradley. Called for church letters, brethren J. Rogers and W.A.S. Hogan appointed to read them. Enrolled names of delegates. [Not given] Proceeded to election of officers: Eld. James Buys, Moderator; W.R. Bingham, Clerk; J.M. Cooper, Treasurer. Called for petitionary letters, when the following churches petitioned for admittance: Carolina, Bienville Parish; Pleasant Grove, Winn Parish; Union, Caldwell Parish; Hebron, Winn Parish; Fish Creek, Rapides Parish; Providence, Winn Parish; Sardis, Winn Parish, which were received. Appointed committee to arrange preaching during the session to wit: J. Rogers, T.A. Jordon, J.R. Brady, A.J. Smith, and W.A.S. Hogan. Appointed the following Committees: On Temperance - H.M. Cook, D. O'Quinn, J. Rogers On Sabbath Schools - W.A. Lee, D. Hogan, A.J. West On Publications & Documents - A. Bradley, C.B. Gates, H. King On State of Churches - E. A?a??s [film not clear], E. Preuett, W.R. Bingham On Finance - J. Rogers, D. O'Quinn, A. Bradley, D.M. Wharton Sunday, Oct. 7, 1860 - - - - - - - - - - - Missionary Sermon preached by Eld. J.S. Matthews, followed by Eld. Jas. Buys; after which there was a collection taken up for Domestic Missions amounting to $18.55. The stand was filled in the afternoon by Elds. H.M. Cook and D. O'Quin. The congregation to-day was large and attentive. Monday, Oct. 8, 1860 - - - - - - - - - - - Met pursuant to adjournment. Prayer by brother W.R. Bingham. Called roll and corrected minutes. Called for reports of Committees: On The State of The Churches - Your Committee on the state of the Churches beg leave to report that from all the information we can gather from the letters sent up to your body, and otherwise, we are rejoiced to find that, with one or two exceptions, the Churches are in prosperous condition, and that the Lord is reviving his work among them. Respectfully submitted, E. Adams, Chairman. On Sabbath Schools - Your Committee on Sabbath Schools beg leave to report: .... We regret to find but little interest manifested on this important subject. We submit the following resolution and recommend its adoption: Resolved, That we recommend the pastors of all the Churches composing this Association to impress the importance of Sabbath Schools on the minds of their Churches. West, Chairman On Temperance - Your Committee beg leave to report: That we fear that intoxicating liquors are used as a beverage to too great an extent by the members of our churches, to the disgrace of the cause of religion and the great injury of their own souls. Therefore we would earnestly recommend the apostolic injunction to "abstain from all appearance of evil" and to touch not, taste not, handle not, the liquid poison. And we further recommend that you appoint some Minister to preach a sermon on the subject of Temperance, at the next session of your body. All of which is respectfully submitted, H.M. Cook, Chairman. On Publications & Documents - Your Committee beg leave to report: We recommend the "Louisiana Baptist" published at Mt. Lebanon, by brother W.F. Wells, to the favorable consideration and liberal patronage of all Baptists of Louisiana...and we hope the time is not far distant when it wil be second to no Baptist paper in the South. To this end - Resolved. That we will use all our influence to extend its circulation. We also recommend the publications of the South-Western Publishing House, Nashville, Tenn.
