All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** ** From: Inquest Book, Office of the Clerk of Court, Winn Parish, LA Inquest of Emile Jackson An inquisition taken at Winnfield, La. on the 29th day of October, 1906 before the Coroner of the Parish of Winn upon view of the body of Emile Jackson there lying. The jurors whose names we hereunto subscribe having been sworn to inquire on behalf of the State when and by what means said Emile Jackson came to his death upon their oath do say that the said Emile Jackson came to his death on October 29, 1906 from a gun shot (pistol) wound inflicted by a pistol in the hands of one Will Davis without provocation. We therefore charge the said Will Davis with murder and recommend that a warrant be issued and placed in the hands of the Sheriff and that the said Will Davis be arrested and held to answer said charge of murder. Teagle J. T. Long Winnfield, La., Oct. 29, 1906 In inquest, body of Emile Jackson. Alec Perkins, sworn, says: the woman Rosa Lee, Will Davis' woman, and Sonnie, Emile's woman were quarreling Emile Jackson's woman had a knife Emile took the knife from his woman and put it in his pocket Will Davis asked Emile what he said when he came up and Emile said he took the knife away from Sonnie and put it in his pocket and told them if they wanted to fight to go into the woods and fight, Emile took the knife out of his pocket and showed it to Will Davis and as he put the knife in his pocket Will Davis shot him Emile did not open the knife Emile did not attempt to use the knife on Will Davis nor did he in any way insult Will Davis, Emile did not seem mad, Will Davis fired three shots the first shot killed Emile and also hit me, Will Davis seemed to want to shoot someone all day he attempted to draw his gun on George Hutchinson about 1 o'clock p.m. and we kept him from it he was laying for Tom Nail and I think he would have killed him had he not killed Emile. This occurred Oct. 28, 1906. Aleck Perkins Frank Moss, sworn, says: I was standing about 20 or 30 feet from Emile Jackson when he was shot he was shot by a man they call Will Davis. This was done at Mr. Tansey's Camp about one mile from the Court House. I heard Will Davis say what have you been doing to my woman Emile said man I wasn't doing anything but taking knife away from my woman and told her to fight your woman. Emile here show Will Davis the knife he had takened from the woman an put it back in his pocket. I am a man like you if I had wanted your woman to quit I would have gone to you. Then Will Davis said yes and I am going to kill some of you sons of bitches if you don't quit fooling with my wife and as he said this he drew his gun and fired, Emile Jackson turned and fell on his face Will Davis fired two more shots one shot as Emile fail and one after he was on the ground I saw Will Davis go into his ten immediately after the shooting and I never saw him anymore. This was on Oct. 28th, 1906. Frank Moss Cora Simms, sworn, says: Elmora and myself were standing talking when Rosa Lee Chambers asked if we're talking about her we told her no we had something else to talk about She said is I was talking about her she would cut me with an ax and put me in the woods I told her she was not bad and that I wasn't afraid of her. Emile came then and took the knife from me and said he didn't not allow me to fuss around here with these women Rosa Lee Chambers went and told Will Davis that Emile took the knife away from me to cut her with Will Davis then went and asked Emile about it and Emile said to him Will Davis Emile showed the knife and put it back in his pocket and Will Davis shot him when the first shot fired Emile turned and fell and Will Davis fired three more shots at Emile but they all missed him.
