All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: June 5, 1908 Comrade Another Buck Instantly Killed Coldwater the Scene of Coldblooded Murder Committed by a Son of Ham Last Saturday afternoon, at about 2 o'clock, near Coldwater, in Winn Parish, Sam Johnton was shot in the head and almost instantly killed by Haywood Jackson, the weapon used being a pistol. Both parties are negroes. At an inquest held by Coroner J. J. Peters, over the body of Johnson, the following facts developed: Jackson had accused Johnson of having held him up some time previous, and had made threats that he would have his money or kill him, having previously armed himself, he approached Johnson who was standing near a party playing Coon-Can, and after making a demand for his money and using violent language, with his pistol in hand, shot Johnson in the head. The coroner's jury, in view of the facts elicited, rendered a verdict of murder against Jackson, and ordered a warrant issued to this effect. Jackson escaped after killing Johnson and has not yet been arrested.
