The cash was recovered following a joint investigation by East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Bryan Clemmons, East Baton Rouge District Attorney Sargent Pitcher, Jr., the FBI, and Winn Parish law officials. The money, found buried in a suitcase wrapped in a plastic bag about one foot under the ground, is part of that taken from the Louisiana National Bank branch in Baton Rouge November 12, 1971, Sheriff Clemmons said. Larry J. Brown, a 21 year old Baton Rouge Negro, was arrested Monday, November 15 at his home and charged in connection with the armed robbery. Sheriff Clemmons said the bank manager had been kidnaped on his way to work about 8:15 a.m. on the day of the robbery. Cash of $ 69,282 and $ 30,000 in travelers checks and bonds was taken in the bank robbery. $6,000 of the money was recovered from a clothes dryer at Brown's residence and another $ 2,000 was used by Brown to purchase an automobile. Sergeant Jim Rushing of the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office said the bonds and travelers checks were thrown into the Mississippi River and all are believed to destroyed. Brown is married to a former Winnfield resident, but officials said that his wife had nothing to do with the robbery to their knowledge. A lead on the whereabouts of the money was supplied to the Baton Rouge law officers by "an informant," the Sheriff said. The Baton Rouge law enforcement personnel were headed to Winnfield in a sheriff's office plane Thursday, but were grounded by bad weather in Alexandria. From Alexandria, they reached Winnfield in FBI cars. Along with unidentified FBI agents on the case in Winnfield were District Attorney Sargent Pitcher, Sheriff Bryan Clemmons, Deputy Jim Rushing, and Deputy Fred Cockrum, the sheriff's office pilot. The men returned to Baton Rouge late Thursday and are continuing their investigation. The Louisiana National Bank branch is located on Plank Road in Baton Rouge.
