Hutchinson Is Acquitted On Murder Charge Earl Hutchinson, tried on a murder charge here last week in connection with the death of Loy Greer at Sikes on February 18th, was acquitted by a jury which returned its verdict Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The trial began Thursday morning of last week. The case went to the jury at 2 a.m. Sunday. After deliberating two hours, jurors reported they could not reach a verdict and were locked up until the next morning. Greer, struck with an iron rod during an altercation with Hutchinson at Sikes, died shortly afterward when he fell out of a truck in which he was being taken to a hospital. The state contended that the blow he received, if it was not the direct cause of death, contributed to his death. Defense attorneys Julius Long of Shreveport and A. A. Moss of Winnfield argued that the state's evidence did not show "beyond a reasonable doubt" that the blow Greer received was a contributing cause of death. The jury that tried Hutchinson was composed of E. L. McGuffey, A. L. Ladner, Ed Garrett, Dudley Shell, A. B. Hodge, H. W. Stinson, Ray Parker, J. M. Green, F. L. Main, Bob Stroud, T. M. Wyatt, and Festus Brewton.
