Leopold, Jr., and Richard Loeb, by Judge John R. Caverly. The youth of the defendants was all that saved them from the noose. "It would have been the path of least resistance to impose the extreme penalty of the law," said the gray-haired judge in his decision. "In choosing imprisonment instead of death the court is moved chiefly by the age of the defendants, boys of eighteen and nineteen years." (I am not sure if this relates to Winn Parish as the names of the defendants or the judge are not familiar, however the victim's name is common in Winn Parish)
