ALBERT SHEPHERD ARTICLE, Winn Parish, LA Submitted by Greggory E. Davies, Winnfield, LA ********************************************** Copyright. Albert Shepherd Used His Fist On A Dusky Damsel. Albert Shepherd, colored, conducts a boarding house down in "coon hollow" for the accommodation of the "dusky 700" who visit Winnfield. Some female members of that tribe have been hanging around the place, and when they desired to depart Albert refused to deliver their baggage till a board bill was paid. This raised the ire of the "butterflies" and they decided to have Albert "pulled" for running a "disrepable house." He was tried in Mayor's court Monday morning and was acquitted. After the trial he was standing on the sidewalk on Abel Street when one of the coons remarked that she would "see if he hits me ." She started to brush by him when his left fist got unruly and came into contact with her cheek. She raised a yell that woke all the merchants and clerks from their usual morning nap, and the officials at the courthouse were so thoroughly excited that they turned themselves around to more comfortable positions. Albert went over to Mayor's court and got a fine of $ 2.50, while the "butterfly" was found guilty of raising an unusually loud howl in a quiet place and fined $ 2.50.
