All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** >From the June 19, 1903 Southern Sentinel A NEGRO SHOT A Coon Fight In Epple & Hayes' Grading Camp A fight among the negroes in Epple & Hayes' grading camp located a few miles out of town on the Red River Valley Railroad took place Saturday night and a young negro about twenty years of age was shot through the chest with a 38-caliber bullet from a pistol. He was brought to town Sunday morning and sent to a hospital in Shreveport for treatment. He was in a precarious condition and died on the train before reaching Shreveport. The fight was over a crap game it is said. But others say it was over a woman and it is hinted that a woman shot the boy. It is not known positively who did the shooting. Three negroes, Will Fuller, Bette Davis, and another negress, have been jailed on a charge of murder. (Submitted by Greggory Ellis Davies, Winnfield, Winn Parish, LA.)
