March, 1952 Negro, Hit in Back By Shotgun Blast, Not Seriously Hurt An argument over past-due house rent led to the shooting of a Winnfield negro early Tuesday morning, and arrest of another local negro on charges of "shooting with intent to kill and murder". Painfully injured was Sterling Dailey, 58, who was hit in the back and legs by a 12-gauge shotgun blast fired by James Cole, 54. Cole was arrested immediately after the shooting by Chief Deputy G. M. Walsworth. The incident occurred in the Milltown colored quarters about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and was an aftermath of a heated argument and fight between the two negroes Monday afternoon at Fittz Dairy, where both are employed, according to Deputy Walsworth. He said Cole admitted the shooting, and reported the weapons was a 12-gauge single-barrel shotgun loaded with squirrel shot. The blast was fired at a distance of approximately 40 yards. Monday afternoon the two became involved in an argument over past due house rent which Cole is alleged to owe Dailey. It was reported that several blows were exchanged before the two were separated. Later, early Tuesday morning, Dailey hitched a mule to his wagon and was preparing to "do some hauling" near Cole's house. Cole is said to have gone into the house, got his shotgun, and fired. Dailey received medical treatment at Martin's Hospital, where his condition was reported very painful but not serious. (Submitted by Greggory Ellis Davies, Winnfield, Winn Parish, LA.)
