All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: June 21 & June 28, 1951 Winn Parish Enterprise Article No. 1 Negro Girl Held In Slaying of Her Step-Father Mattie Lee Boyd, 16 year old Winnfield Negro girl, is in jail with murder charges pending, in connection with the knife slaying of her step-father, Steve Davis, about 86, late Wednesday afternoon, according to the Sheriff's Department. Davis died last night in the Winnfield General Hospital of a single stab wound in the chest, which caused internal hemorrhage, according to Dr. G. M. Rodgers. He was brought to the hospital between 7:30 and 8 p.m. in a very weak condition. Dr. Rodgers stated that he must have been stabbed earlier in the afternoon perhaps 5:30. Information was limited Thursday morning, as hospital officials and city law officers, who arrested the Boyd girl, reported that neither the girl nor her family would talk about it. Town Marshal Gamble Carter said the girl reported that her mother and brother were present at the time of the stabbing which occurred in the New L. & A. colored addition. Marshall Carter said he was called by hospital attendants, and arrested the Boyd girl between 11 p. m. and midnight Wednesday. The case was turned over to the Parish Sheriff's Department Thursday morning for further investigation and prosecution. Article No. 2 Winnfield Negro Girl Charged With Murder Mattie Lee Boyd, 16 year old Winnfield Negro girl, who was arrested last week in connection with the stabbing of her stepfather, Steve Davis, 86, ws charged with murder this week following a coroner's inquest last Friday. It is charged that she killed Davis by stabbing him in the neck last Wednesday afternoon. Davis died Wednesday night in General Hospital of a single wound. The dead man was a property owner in the new L & A colored quarters. The girl is being held in jail without bond pending the Fall grand jury term this September. This will make two murder cases before the grand jury when it meets again. The other is Alonso Sapp, Atlanta Negro, charged with the shotgun slaying of his wife, Maggie Sapp.
