H. Dickson of Ward 10, Winn Parish, was arrested Independence Day on a charge of attempting to murder Sheriff C. M. Robinson. He held a loaded .410 gauge shotgun on the Sheriff for several minutes before he finally laid the gun aside. Two days earlier George Graham of Winnfield held a loaded pistol on Sheriff Robinson, but the gun was wrestled from him by Deputy Wesley Carter. Graham is charged with disturbing the peace, assault with a dangerous weapon, and resisting an officer. The earlier episode happened Saturday afternoon near Laurel Heights when Robinson and Carter attempted to arrest Graham and a companion, Hulen Gorham of Winnfield. The Sheriff said Gorham broke and ran. When Robinson attempted to catch him, the Sheriff fell to the ground and his pistol fell out of his back pocket. Graham then grabbed the gun and leveled it at the Sheriff, according to Mr. Robinson. Deputy Carter then hit Graham with his pistol and recovered the Sheriff's pistol. Both Graham and Gorham, who is charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and resisting arrest were released later on bonds of $ 750 each. Another Narrow Escape Sheriff Robinson gave this version of the arrest of S. H. Dickson. Late Tuesday afternoon, July 4, the sheriff and his son, Deputy C. M. Robinson, Jr., were patrolling in Ward 10 when they passed the Dickson home. Dickson yelled at the Sheriff to stop by his house as he wanted to see him. The officers drove on down the road for a short visit with another Ward 10 resident, then returned to the Dickson home. Dickson was sitting on the porch holding a shotgun on his knees. As Sheriff Robinson opened the front gate Dickson raised his gun, cursed the Sheriff, and said he was going to kill him. Robinson said that he and Mrs. Dickson pleaded with the man to put down the gun. Meanwhile Deputy C. M. Robinson, Jr., leveled his pistol at Dickson. The man was finally persuaded to surrender his shotgun. He was placed in jail and is being held on $ 1250 bond. Robinson said he was certainly glad that there was no shooting as several children were in the yard at the time. He said he did not know why Dickson wanted to kill him. The sheriff arrested Dickson several months ago on a charge of being drunk and disturbing the peace. The charges were later dropped. Robinson said Dickson had been drinking when the officers stopped at his home Tuesday afternoon. (Submitted by Greggory Ellis Davies, Winnfield, Winn Parish, LA.)
