Floyd Lee Drewett Murder ........................... Negroes Appeal Death Verdict in Drewett Murder Two Alexandria Negroes have announced they will appeal a verdict of death, imposed when they were tried and found guilty of the murder of Floyd Lee Drewett recently. Floyd Lee Drewett, murdered in a service station which he was working, was the nephew of W. U. Drewett of Winnfield. The two Negroes, Jasper Brazile, and Ruby Johnson, were found guilty in the Ninth District Court. Judge Walter Hunter delayed the mandatory death sentence, to permit the defense counsel to prepare an appeal. It was reported that the verdict will be appealed to the Louisiana Supreme Court, along with a motion for a new trial. The District Court previously denied motions for moving the trial outside Papides parish, and for appointing an additional defense counsel with five years experience. (NOTE: Floyd Lee Drewett was the son of Levi Evans Drewett and Willie C. Ray Drewett. He was born 6 Feb 1903 and died 5 Jan. 1954, and he is buried in Butler Cemetery, Rapides Parish, La. He was grandson of Tilman E. Drewett and great grandson of William H. Drewett, Winn Parish Civil War veteran.)
