The victim was identified as General Jackson, 66 year old retired railroad worker who lived just east of the turpentine plant. The other man involved was Jim Goodwin, 55, an unemployed resident of T & G Quarters. Police Chief Percy Roberts said that Jackson's throat was slashed and he was left bleeding in the street on the ground near Goodwin's house on South Long Street. Roberts and Chief Deputy Sheriff J. J. Crippen said they were called to the scene about 1:10 p.m. Crippen said this was believed to be about 15-30 minutes after the fight. Roberts said that for years Goodwin and Jackson has associated together and had worked together. While at Goodwin's home Saturday afternoon, Jackson asked Goodwin to pay a one dollar debt, Roberts said, adding that Goodwin had a dollar bill in his shirt pocket. An argument developed and the two went outside. Roberts said Goodwin claimed that Jackson snatched Goodwin's shirt pocket in an attempt to get the money and the pocket tore. It was then that the throat slashing occurred. The officers said they did not know whether Jackson might have recovered had he been taken to the hospital immediately after the incident. Goodwin was charged with murder.
