Coroner Dr. Billy W. Floyd pronounced Nathaniel Jones, about 75, dead at the scene of the shooting at the Jones residence in the L & A Quarters. According to Chief Deputy J. J. Crippen, who investigated the fracas along with Police Chief Percy Roberts, Jr., Jones fired the first shot with a shotgun at Charles Sowers and hit him in the shoulder. This occurred as Sowers entered the house from the porch. Sowers reportedly ran out of the house, reentered with a 32-20 pistol, with which he fired a single shot at Jones. Sowers then ran out of the house and fired four more shots at Jone from a window. The elderly man was hit only once and this fatal shot entered his chest. Sowers was taken to Winnfield General Hospital for emergency treatment and was later transferred to Confederate Memorial Hospital in Shreveport, where his condition is listed as not serious. No charges have been filed pending Sowers release from the hospital.
