O. Baker, was reported still alive at the charity hospital in Pineville Thursday. According to reports, Marshal Baker was called to the home of Robert Maxey at 4 a.m. Sunday to remove or arrest a drunk negro in a ditch near the Maxey house. Mr. Maxey stated that he was going fishing and did not want to leave the colored man near his home with his family there alone. It was said that when the marshal aroused the negro that the negro started cursing and Mr. Baker hit him over the head with a black-jack. Then Keegan began cursing again and told Mr. Baker, "You will have to kill me". It was said that the night marshal told Keegan not to advance on him but the negro did not obey him. Baker fired only one shot which struck the negro in the stomach. After shooting Keegan, Baker immediately telephoned for the negro ambulance and local doctors. He had the man rushed to a local clinic where he was given first aid and then carried to the charity hospital in Pineville. Mr. Baker also called Deputy Sheriff Miley Walsworth to the scene. Article No. 2 Wounded Negro Dies August 8th At Pineville Alex Keegans, colored, died on August 8 at a Pineville hospital as the result of a gun shot would in the lower abdomen which was inflicted on July 27 at 4 a.m. by Night Marshal E. O. Baker of Winnfield. Keegans, 35, resided in the Brooks Quarters, and was employed by R. J. Lasyone, local plumber. The colored man was shot by Baker early Sunday morning, July 27, near the home of Robert Maxey where he was found drunk.
