Kidd/Long Fight, 1903, Winn Parish, LA Submitted by Gregg Davies, Winnfield, LA ********************************************** Copyright. Kidd and Floyd Long engaged in a difficulty over a bouquet of flowers. Several words were passed and Kidd knocked Long down. Long got up and getting hold of a piece of plank, struck Kidd on the back of the head, knocking him down. Neither were hurt and the fight soon ended. It occurred in front of W. M. Wallace's store. {This explains a widely told popular story about Huey P. Long's assassination and Attorney Earl "Squire" Kidd's comments about same. Mr. Richard Watts was working in the Winn Parish Clerk of Court's office at the time and folks were in a panic around Winnfield following Huey's death. Anyone travelling to Baton Rouge would stop by the courthouse and give those who didn't have one, a ride. Lawyer Earl "Squire" Kidd happened in the clerk's office all dressed up and Mr. Watts asked him, "Earl, you sure are dressed up, are you going to Huey's funeral?" Squire shot back, "Hell no, but I approve of it!" (The above submitted by Greggory Ellis Davies, Winnfield, Winn Parish.)
