All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** From: August 22, 1968 Winn Parish Enterprise-News American Negro Killed, One Wounded In Shootings A Winnfield Negro was killed and another was critically wounded in a shoot-out at a Black Lake night spot at about 6 p.m. Sunday, August 18. Dead is Willie Matlock. In critical condition at the Confederate Memorial Hospital in Shreveport is Nolan McGuire. Natchitoches Sheriff Sam James said witnesses told him that the two men became involved in an argument outside the Black Lake Go-Go Club, just off Highway 9, about eight miles southeast of Campti. The argument was over an ice chest owned by McGuire. McGuire was shot in the chest several times with a .32 caliber pistol. James said Matlock started into the club with a gun in his hand and that the proprietor, Robert Batts, negro, 48, halted him at the door and shot him once with a 30-30 rifle. The sheriff said Matlock died almost instantly. He was a truck driver for the Winnfield street department. He said Batts is being held in the Natchitoches Parish jail pending completion of investigation.
