Atlanta Negro Woman Slain; Husband Held

A murder charge is expected to be brought against Alonso Sapp, 55 year old
Atlanta Negro, in connection with the fatal shooting of his wife, Maggie Sapp,
about 8 a.m. this morning, according to Winn Parish Sheriff C. M. Robinson.

Sapp is in the parish jail with no charge as yet, pending a coroner's inquest
Friday at 1:30 p.m.

The woman was shot in the back with a 12 gauge single barrel shotgun, loaded
with number six squirrel shot, the sheriff said.

The sheriff stated neighbors reported the two had been quarreling for the past
two or three days.  They were at the home of Arthur Sapp, brother to
Alonso Sapp, when the shooting occurred.  It is reported that Alonso
Sapp went into the house, saying he was going to lie down on the bed, and
got the shotgun.  He reportedly returned to the front door, and shot his wife,
who was on the porch, in the back from a distance of about 12 feet.

Her body was brought to Ben Johnson's Funeral Home in Winnfield.

The sheriff said "I can't see anything except a murder charge for him."

He reported that Sapp was trying to get someone to bring him to Winnfield to
give himself up for the shooting when law enforcement officers arrived.

Sapp's home is near Dudley Lang's store on the Atlanta-Verda road.

Atlanta Negro Charged With Murdering Wife

Alonso Sapp, 55 year old Atlanta Negro was formally charged with murder last
week after a coroner's inquest last Friday in connection with the fatal
shooting of his wife, Maggie Sapp.

He is being held in the parish jail without bond until the Fall meeting of
the grand jury, the first Monday in September.
