Roberts identified the man as Milam Vaughan, Jr. The woman, identified as Mary Elliott, lives in a small house atop the L & A Hill on the east side of the Atlanta Road. Roberts said that he, city policemen Shelby Connor, G. C. Bates, and parish Chief Deputy J. J. Crippen heard the shooting about 11 p.m. Sunday. They drove to the area and were told by one Negro man that the Elliott woman had fired a gun, and she had done so on a previous night. The matter was dropped for the night. Roberts said that the officers considered it too dangerous to attempt to go to the woman's house since she might be frightened by their approach and open fire again. On Monday morning Roberts said that as he was preparing to check further in the matter, a Negro man discovered Vaughan's body in a pool of blood by the Elliott woman's house. This man went to the courthouse and reported the matter to Police Jury Secretary Kenneth Watts who had arrived at his office early. Watts telephoned Roberts who went back to the Elliott woman's house. Vaughan was struck three times in the head, once in the shoulder, and again in the back with bullets from a .22 caliber pistol, Roberts said. Roberts said the Elliott woman told him she had intended to come and report the shooting Monday morning, but the discovery of the body was reported before she got to town. The Chief said that footprints were found all around the house, and that a tar paper wall covering was found ripped from the outside wall of the woman's house. "Vaughan evidently was trying to break in," Roberts said. No charges have been filed in the case. The Chief said the woman had not been taken into custody.
