We the Jurors of this inquest having been sworn to inquire on behalf of the State when and by what means the said Tom White came to his death, upon this oath do say: "That this said Tom White came to his death at Atlanta, Louisiana, March 22nd, 1919, from a gun shot wound, the gun in the hands of an unknown person." Bice ATLANTA, LOUISIANA, March 23, 1919 Dr. John Pugh sworn, says: Last night about 11:45 o'clock Mr. Grimmett called me over the telephone and told me that Tom White had been shot up in the Quarters and for me to come by the Hotel and he would go with me; when we reached the gambling shack he was lying dead on the outside of the building with a gun shot wound in the left temple about two (2) inches from the eye. I do not know who killed him. Signed: John Pugh, M. D. Jack Broussard, sworn, says: I was up at the gambling shack last night. I was in the room where they were gambling. I saw a white man come in and gamble with a colored man the white man losing twenty dollars ($20.00), the white man wanted the colored man to shoot twenty dollars, and the colored man refused to do that and the white man got mad an dsaid he would brake up the game, and he went out of the room and we were afraid he would shoot in the house. And we all left the room to the white man, went out on the side of the room and we went out at the front door. This occurred about twenty-five or thirty minutes before Tom White was killed.
