Aldermen gave Mayor Jack Henderson the "go ahead" to start interviewing applicants for the positions. Starting salary for the new policemen will be $ 350, Henderson said. He explained that this is the regular starting pay for all police officers. The Council carried the motion on a recommendation of City Police Chief Percy W. Roberts, Jr. Roberts said he was in favor of hiring now, since it would be necessary for the two men to undergo special law and order training before joining the police force. Article No. 2 Two Negro Men Named By City For Police Jobs Two Negro men have been hired as policemen for the City of Winnfield, Mayor Jack Henderson said. The men were chosen from a number of applicants at a special Board of Aldermen meeting Tuesday, January 19. Narvin A. Powell and Roosevelt J. Brown were the pair picked by the City. Police Chief Percy Roberts, Jr. said the new men will not begin their duties for about two months. On March 1, they will enroll in law enforcement courses at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. After completing their training they will be fitted for uniforms and then start service, Roberts said. Powell and Brown will patrol the L & A and T & G Quarters in Winnfield.
