W. Evans Recalls When Winnfield Had Only Two Stores Dear Editor: I see in your paper where you have ask your subscribers to write so now I am trying to write a few things about Winnfield. I was born and reared seven miles west of Winnfield. I can remember well when there wasn't but two stores in Winnfield, Uncle Morris Bernstein had his store just across from the old bank and J. D. Wright and G. P. Long, the father of the City Clerk, and a man named Smith were partners in a store about where John Emerson's drug store is now. Bernstein had a four horse team and hauled his merchandise from Montgomery. Joe Cison (Sisson?) drove the team and they hauled their freight with J. W. Dickerson driving it. Long, Wright, and Smith had a four yolk (yoke) team and they hauled their freight with J. W. Dickerson driving it. Uncle Bob Jones and Uncle Dave Dunn were the only ones living in town at that time. Uncle Dunn lived where the Methodist Church is now and Uncle Bob Jones lived where Taylor's Laundry is at this time. Well, I could write a lot about Winnfield and Winn Parish. If you care to put this little bit in your paper, I will write more about our town and parish later.
