John says he escaped "mainly by running". Was never wounded. 10) Whom did you marry? Answer: Lucinda Carter, sister of Cal & Bob Carter. 11) Describe conditions of life in Winn from your earliest recollections? Answer: Lived near Indian (Choctaw) Village on Bear Creek. Father bought hogs and cattle from them. Indians and whites used cap and ball rifles and were expert shots. Finally, Indians were forced into new hunting grounds on account of so many white settlers coming in. Many cattle, horses and hogs strayed away and because wild, these were hunted by whites and Indians. Horses were run down and lassoed. Cattle and hogs were hunted and shot for food. Wild games consisted of deer, bear, panthers, wolves, catamounts, and all sorts of smaller animals. Wild fowl such as turkeys, geese, ducks, etc. Jerry Duplissey, father of John, now living, followed hunting largely for a living. Sold deer hides (green). He didn't consider his day's hunt complete unless he killed 10 deer. His method was still hunting and stalking them. He owned quite a bunch of hounds that he used for hunting panthers and bear. When the dogs treed a panther some expert shot would shoot it through the spine to paralize it. When it fell to the ground the dogs pitched into it and a great fight took place. Panther coule only use its teeth and front feet and after a bloody fiht the panther was shot or killed with a club. In one of these fights Jerry Suplissey got too close and the panther grabbed his forearm and bit it so badly that he never did regain full use of it. On one occason Jerry drove 300 head of hogs to Alex. and these were probably shipped on a boat to N.O. He owned at one time 1800 head of cattle. 12) Where did the Franks come from? Answer: From Cape Gerardau, Mo., and were Scotch-Irish. Can't give any clear details of family. Additional Comments: Source: Melrose Collection, Dr. Milton A. Dunn, Cammie Henry Archives, Northwestern State University, Natchitoches, LA. Apparently someone had written to one of the Duplissey descendants a series of questions. Included is a note which states "The Duplisses were here at Natchitoches 1720." Another note indicates "Dr. Harrison notes from John H. Duplissey". Envelope is dated Dec. 24, Shreveport, LA and is addressed to Dr. M. A. Dunn, Melrose, LA. The no. "21" is stamped to the side which could indicate the year 1921. Handwritten on the outside of the envelope iss "Winn Parish Dr. Burgess H. Harrison".
