The first quarter was a punting duel between Parker of Winnfield and Aycock of Minden, with Aycock having the slight advantage over Parker. "With just seven minutes to go, Holcomb grabbed a fumble and raced about fifty yards for a touchdown. Parker kicked goal. Then followed a rush by Winnfield for another touchdown with long gains by Sowers, Grigsby, and Parker. With only a few minutes to go and with about twenty yards to go for a touchdown, Parker stood on the thirty two yard line and place kicked a perfect field goal from a difficult angle. "The game eliminated Minden from the state title." Excerpt from "North Louisiana Championship; Championship Schore 10 to 0" article "Saturday, Nov. 24, Winnfield High ended her football season of 1923 with a brilliant victory over Ruston High. The game was played at Ruston and a large number of Winnfield fans were at the game. The squad left Saturday morning on the early train accompanied by a large crowd of rooters. The train arrived about eight thirty that morning and the boys went to the Arlington Hotel where they remained all the morning until dinner and then ate and after resting awhile dressed and after a talk from the coach went out to the field. "The game started with Winnfield kicking. Ruston then began a drive down the field through passes and end runs. All during the first quarter Ruston worked hard for a touchdown, but lacked the class to make it. Also in the second quarter they tired desperately to score, once working the ball to the one yard line through heroic effort on the part of our line they were held for downs and then Parker punted out of danger. "The second half started with Winnfield headed for a touchdown. They would not be denied and in the last period through the work of the famous Parker to Custer forward passed combination and end runs and line plays, Cap't. Sowers made his last touchdown for the old RED AND WHITE. Parker kicked the field goal. Then later from the twenty yard line Parker booted a perfect field goal for another three points, making the score 10 to 0. The game was featured by the great forward pass combination, Parker to Custer, and by the greased pig of the Ruston backs who greased their legs so that they would be hard to tackle. Some scheme, but it didn't work. "Those who made the trip to Ruston were: "Coach Stokes, Manager Phillips, Drewett, Fletcher, L. Sowers, Grigsby, Parker, Newton, J. Sowers, M. Wasson, H. Wasson, Custer, Holcomb, Neal, Anderson, Mosley, Stacks, and Francis. "The All State Team "On the all state team of 1923 Winnfield can boast of one, Newton, who made all state guard, we also have one, Parker, who made second team as guard. Almost the entire team got an honorable mention." Excerpt from "Seniors Lead Honor Roll Month of November" "Grace Phillips, a ninth grade student, again leads the school average, 98.2.
