E. Long in an article which gives a few of the principle facts of the early history of the parish. "Winn Parish was organized in 1852. The first newspaper published here was the Sentinel, a worthy ancestor of the Winnfield News-American. Ace Manuel was the first sheriff, the first judge was Hon. Thomas Crawford, first clerk Austin Banks, first assessor Rowell Wall. Col. David Pierson was the first lawyer, John L. Walker, Miss Huthnance and Mr. Tully the first school teachers. The first school building stood where the new high school is being erected. Uncle Morris Bernstein established the first store here 1852, G. A. Hargis the second. The first settlers were a Mr. Allbright, Marshal Jones, John Boyett, James and George Gray, Thomas Swafford who settled on Saddle Bayou. Log rolling was the order of the day and people would journey ten and fifteen miles to assist a neighbor at log rolling time. Hunting was easy for wild game of all kinds were in abundance.." Mr. Long is one of the oldest citizens of the parish and is well acquainted with its growth and development and is among those who have labored for this progress.
